“I am not rich, but I really love you and I will always take care of you.”
These words arrested me. I listened and they soaked in. Today, I am the proud recipient of his unbroken promises and love so I honor him.
During our courtship, we frequently wrote letters to each other because it was a long-distance relationship, and many promises were made. Here are extracts from two of his letters:
“Firstly, let me thank you for commending me for the way I place you before the Lord. You see, Pat, I see you in no other light. I love you very much…Unconditionally love you, honey! This is something I would like you to know and feel wanted. My eyes are focused on Jesus and you. I do not know how you feel but I feel you’re being a part of me, and this is how I would like it to be throughout our lives.”
“…what brings security in a relationship? The answer is consistency. It says, early in the day and late at night it stands firm; when pain or hardships bite, consistency does not bleed; when the majority is tired and irritable, consistency is stable and resilient, not insensitive, boring…but reliable and faithful. Consistency thrives on sacrifices and unselfishness.”
These statements have rung true. Throughout our thirty-five years of marriage, we daily reaffirm our love for each other with “I love you.” which is as natural as how we would have a glass of water. This meaningful routine has kept our love and commitment strong.
When we began parenting, my husband was concerned about my general well-being, so he ensured that I got adequate rest hence two helpers were employed. When the boys misbehaved, they were admonished with the Word of God. He made it his duty to visit their educational institutions even at the tertiary level locally and overseas. He even entertained their friends as he always said, “show me your friends, show me who you are”.
Spiritually, he ensures that our worship does not remain in the church where he is an Elder but has led us into weekly devotions home. During these sessions, he taught the boys to pray and lean on God’s words. Three other boys joined our family, and they too were impacted. All the boys accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and he baptized them.
The change in the economy caused him to change his career path. This departure was not without fanfare from the workplace. One worker shared about his astuteness and remarked when she wanted justice, she ensured that she took the case to the “Judge.”
He transitioned into the education system, and this brought more success. On his recent retirement, the community and the educational fraternity heaped praises on his work ethic, his godly demeanor, and his parental roles despite his position as a principal.
He has gained respect from youngsters and general citizens both in and outside the community. This interaction has earned the title “Papa Patterson and Sir.”
No wonder our adult sons each with a family have emulated his dispositions. They too have honored him. From time to time, they call upon their father for advice and insights because of the respect they have for him.
I am happy to share just a glimpse of my husband’s commitment to loving me, but this came from God’s word mirrored in the scripture of 1Timothy 5:25-28. The Lord has placed a husband in my life who loves Him and loves me. For this I praise God and I honor him.
