But what?
The last time she felt like this an argument had broken out in her Inn causing some mild damage to her furnishings. Every room in the Inn was filled with guests, which meant a lot of tempers could fly. She secretly hoped a fight did not happen again.
Rahab went about her days work; cleaning, feeding her guests, enjoying their conversations, laughing along with them. It was as she was sitting at the table with three guests that she heard a knock at her door.
“Now what?” she muttered to herself as she went to open the door.
Two men greeted her. “Hello Miss. We are hoping you might have lodging for us tonight.”
She noticed one of the men kept looking over his shoulder, as though sensing someone was following them.
As Rahab observed the men, she noticed there was something different about them. Almost God-like. They did not ask for her “services”. They were not rood. They were calm, yet concerned.
Sensing they needed her help she replied, “I don’t have a room available, but I could lodge you on my roof if that would help.”
“Yes, thank you.”
Taking them to the roof she quietly said, “If you need to hide, there is some flax you can hide under.”
Nodding, they knew she understood.
As Rahab returned to her guests there was another knock on her door.
“Good-grief. Now who?” Rahab mused.
As she opened the door, a messenger from the king stood before her. “Give us those men who came to your door. They are here to harm our city.”
“What men?” asked Rahab
“Don’t play coy with us Rahab. We know they are here.”
Smiling, Rahab said, “Oh! Those men. Yes two men were here but I had no room for them so I sent them away. They were headed for the gate and after that I don’t know which road they took. Perhaps you could try and catch them. They left moments ago. They couldn’t be that far.”
With a scowl on their faces the men turned and left.
Rahab quickly went to the roof to talk with the men. She learned they were, indeed, godly men who were on a mission to check out Jericho. She learned the city and all its inhabitants would soon be destroyed.
“Even me?” asked Rahab.
“Because you have been so kind as to hide and protect us, when we return to destroy this city, you and your family will be spared. But, you cannot tell anyone about our visit, or about our plans. If you do, our commitment to save you will become null and void. As a sign of our commitment to you, place a scarlet rope out your window, hanging down your wall. If we see the rope when we return, we will come and save you and your family.”
“Thank you. I promise to say nothing and I promise to gather my family.”
After the men left, Rahab had a bigger problem to solve. How was she going to convince her family to come to her home, stay for who-knows-how-long, and wait until who-knows-when.
She could envision the conversation.
“Mom, Dad you need to come live with me for awhile. Bring my brother and sister and their families. Don’t ask questions. Just trust me.”
Come to the home of a prostitute? Her brother hasn’t talked to her for years. He hated her profession. Could he be convinced to come?
Yet, one-by-one they came. Reluctantly and none too happy, but they came. Once inside her house the questions began.
“Why are we here?”
“How long do we stay?”
“Why the scarlet rope out your window?”
To all their questions, Rahab could say nothing.
Then, the day arrived. The march began.
“What’s happening?” asked Mom.
“We’re about to be rescued,” whispered Rahab.
As the wall was falling, Rahabs family were lowered to safety.
With amazement they watched from a distance as Jericho burned.
Her brother hugged her tightly as he said, “Thank you for what you did. We owe our lives to you. Forgive me for treating you as I did. Love you Rahab.”
Something big did happen!
