“The Detox worker yanked my mouth open in front of everyone else,” she sniffles, “You and your husband have been driving me here twice a day for 7 months. Don’t you think Detox would recognize a tongue ring?”
“I’m not going to make it,” she whispers, as we pull up to her apartment. This was her last Detox run. A substitute plan begins tomorrow.
As a Pastor’s wife, I’ve been journeying this heroin hop – driving her 32-year-old, stroke-affected body from her derelict apartment to Detox every night - so that she can receive a synthetic substitute.
My substitute - telling her of Jesus and His power all the way there and back.
At 2 am she phones me, hissing … “This hurts so bad. I’m going out now with a bit of the money I was saving for the baby’s present.”
What she is really saying is, “Will your God still love me even though I’m going to do something bad?”
I am struck by the thought - she is phoning to tell me her substitute plan before she does it. She is being accountable to me – a show of respect for Jesus.
His substitute plan – pouring out His healing blood for her.
I bow my head in that early morning hour, “Lord, may I continue to be an artery that transfuses Your blood into her drug-controlled life - so that one day soon, she won’t hop to heroin.”
