Tony, my husband was touring Canada so every morning he called and gave me an update. This I enjoyed as it evoked laughter and nostalgia. One Tuesday he called earlier than usual so I position myself to enjoy his special adventures but this was not so.
“Pat, I’ve always told you to be careful with your words. Keith called me and complained about what you said to his friend that made her uncomfortable.”
“What are you talking about Tony?”
“Keith said that Marie told him she felt out of place yesterday because of your expressions to her. You were instructing her on how to hold her baby, and you were shocked about the fungus in her toes”
“Tony, would you believe that I said nothing to offend her. As matter of fact, she is the one who brought it up to me. She said she discovered that she was having fungus beneath her toenails, but she is going to look after it now that she has given birth. She even said that since she became pregnant she noticed it. So I said “So long.”
“Pat, you noticed what you said. You must be sensitive to people’s feelings. I can imagine your body language too.”
“Tony, she brought it to my attention”
“I understand, but you should just listen.” He paused. “That means you do not talk”.
“What was Keith’s reaction?”
“I will quote him; I know Aunty Pat will not want to hurt Marie”
“That’s my boy” I felt good but this was short-lived.
“I will not comment on the holding of the baby that is a woman ting”
Both chuckled.
“I will place your breakfast on Facebook.” He laughed aloud.
“I know your scheme, you want me to salivate”
“Pat, always let your words be sweet”
“From now on”
“Pat, later, love you always.”
“Love my darling.” said in low tones.
I rested the phone on the table, got up from the chair. I went into the living room then to the bathroom and took up my towel and returned to the living room. I flung myself on the settee piece. I felt pain, troubled and the quiet atmosphere was like heavy brick walls around me. I bowed my head to pray but sobbed heavily instead. As soon as I wiped the warm tears from my face, more came again.
“Jesus, Jesus”. I shouted.
I heard the echoes reverberated through the house. I was relieved. The walls were broken and I escaped from its enclosures. “Help me with my unbridled tongue, let me speak lovingly and kind. Let me bring peace and mercy to anyone who shares with me.”
I reached for my Bible and read several scriptures that related to the tongue. One of them was in James1:19(KJV) “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:” and the other was found in Proverbs 21:23(KJV)“Whoso keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles.”
From that day I have been taking heed and following this formula of having prayers. Besides this, having Bible study, drawing from the wisdom book to improve my communication and to ensure that what comes from my mouth to others brings life and power to them. I have learnt to listen more and speak less, thus reflecting people’s feeling. In doing so, I would be exercising some measure of self- control of my tongue.
