Lisa scurried into her office and sat down in her wheel-based chair. She shoved her purse back into her desk drawer and sat facing the hallway which housed students off and on most of the day. Professor Manning was giving instructions to his class across the corridor. Her own boss, Chairman of the Art Department, hadn’t returned to his office yet. She reached for the earphones that lay on top of a large stack of dictation.
Suddenly, without warning, she didn’t feel right. Her stomach flip-flopped and she felt dizzy. She concentrated on Professor Manning’s voice. She was in trouble. Darkness surrounded the sides of her head. She knew she should cry out. Embarrassed, she wiped her forehead with a nearby tissue hoping she would be all right.
“Lisa, Lisa… are you all right?” Professor Cannon was holding her in his arms. He had placed a cold cloth on her head.
“What, who, …” Lisa fought the Professor and almost as suddenly as she had regained consciousness, she was out again.
“Call 9-1-1,” she woke up hearing the Professor call out.
Lisa could feel something warm and liquid running down her face. Confused, she finally spoke.
“Why did you have someone call 9-1-1?”
“You passed out, Lisa, but you’re going to be all right.”
While it was comforting for Lisa to have her boss so concerned about her well-being, she was embarrassed. She tried wiggling out of his arms that held her painful head. She asked once again, “what happened?”
“I came back into the office a few minutes ago and found you on the floor. What’s the last thing you remember?”
“Not feeling well, that I should yell out for help. Then nothing.”
Panic overcame Lisa as she writhed in pain from the wound on her head.
In the background, she could hear sirens squealing through the small town. Two EMTs came quickly through the office to aid Lisa. One began taking her vitals; the other investigated the deep cut she had above her left eyebrow.
“Get that off me!” she screamed, tugging at the neck brace being placed around her neck. Although she pushed the EMT’s hand away, he won the battle.
“You’re gonna be okay,” one of the EMTs told her.
The trip to the closest hospital took almost a half-hour. By the time they arrived, Lisa had regained her lost thoughts about what had happened. She wouldn’t make the mistake of napping during her lunch hour instead of eating again.
Once released from the hospital, she curled up with her favorite blanket and her fat cat, Cat, and called it a day. She was thankful her injuries weren’t more serious.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: This is based on a true story. It happened to me while working in the Art Department of a college in Monmouth, Oregon. I still have the scar over my left eyebrow to prove it.
