and a little oil. I am picking up these sticks to light a fire and cook the last meal for me and my son". Elijah asked her to bake a little bread for him first. Before the woman could answer he added, " Thus Saith the Lord God of Israel : .."
The woman stood still as she heard those powerful words. Only prophets and priests of the God of Israel said them. This man, she reasoned must be a man of God, a prophet maybe. She hardly heard the rest of his words. She hastened to prepare the food. She lit the mud oven and placed the iron girdle on it. She opened the flour barrel and emptied the last of the flour into a bowl and kneaded the dough. Making three small loaves she drained the last of the oil from the cruse onto the girdle and baked the cakes. When done she offered the first loaf and a cup of water to the Prophet. She and her son ate the rest. The bread tasted delicious and very satisfying.
The woman cleared the table and washed the dishes. She opened the barrel to wash it and found it full of flour. The cruse was full of oil, too. She faintly remembered the prophet saying some thing about having enough food till the famine ended . But at that time she didn't believe it. Now she knew it was true. God was going to provide for them. She carried the barrel and the cruse and placing them before Elijah, she bowed down and thanked the Lord God of Israel. He had not only stretched the
handful of meal to satisfy their hunger but had also filled the barrel and the cruse promising them of His provision till the end of the famine.
Our Heavenly Father specializes in stretching the little we offer Him into more than enough to cover all our needs. Earlier, He had provided Elijah nourishment from a crow's beak.(2 Kings 17:6), He had also spread out a meal for more than five thousand men with a boy's lunch of two fishes and five loaves (Matthew 14:17 - 21), He had poured out a pot of oil to fill all the pots and pans until its value equaled the debt a widow owed, (the price of two slaves), (2Kings 4: 1 - 7).
Even in my own life, many times when my resources have been stretched to the limit, God has stepped in, at breaking point, and poured out His abundance to satisfy my need. In Malachi 3:10 we hear his voice, " Bring ye all the tithes into the
storehouse, that there may be meat in my house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it".
