The Great Divide was a deep, dark gorge in the middle of the Kuudreele Valley. Millions of years ago, a tall tree had fallen across it and turned to stone. This narrow stone bridge was the only way across the gorge and Nahli had been told that on the other side was a place where other believers lived without fear of imprisonment or death. It was her destination. The more she thought about the peace she would find there, the more confident she became. Her steps quickened and her heart raced. Her greatest fear was getting caught. If she got caught trying to escape, she would be hung.
She walked for miles each day on her sore and bleeding feet. She had attempted to wrap them up with leaves from a Tala tree but the protection it offered was not enough. By the seventh day, Nahli’s feet were caked with blood, dirt, and pebbles. She had only a few yards to go before the gorge would be in sight. It was during those last few yards that she saw a hunting party from the Hidi tribe. If they saw her trying to cross the gorge, they would surely kill her. They were skilled hunters of small game with the bow so hitting her with an arrow would be easy.
She stooped in the bushes hoping they would pass her without notice. Silently, she prayed.
“Dear Heavenly Father, my LORD and God, thank you for bringing me this far. I believe you will get me across The Great Divide. Hide me Father from my enemies. Amen.”
A few minutes later, a dense fog rose from gorge unlike anything Nahli had seen before. It was so thick that the hunting party could no longer be seen. Nahli knew that if she could not see them, then could not see her. She stood up and began to walk towards the gorge. In front of her, the fog opened just enough that she could see where she was going. Soon, she was standing at the edge of the Divide and directly in front of her was stone bridge. The bridge was barely wider than her own foot. Her confidence waned. Again, she prayed.
“Dear Heavenly Father, my LORD and God, thank you for bringing me this far. I believe you will get me across The Great Divide. Guide my steps safely across. Amen.”
She dropped her bag and unwrapped her feet. She stepped out with her right foot onto the cold stone that meant life or death for her. She stretched out her lean brown arms for balance and slowly began the long walk across. The fog was so dense that she could not see the gorge beneath her. All she saw amid the white cloud was the bridge in front of her. Beneath her, she could hear the rushing waters of a mighty river and on her legs and face she could feel the breeze blowing through the emptiness. Fear of falling gripped her. Again, she prayed.
“Dear Heavenly Father, my LORD and God, thank you for bringing me this far. I believe you will get me across The Great Divide. Do not let me fall. Amen.”
The last step for Nahli felt different. It was not cold stone beneath her feet any longer but soft, wet grass. The fog disappeared and in front of Nahli was paradise. She dropped to her knees, looked up to the sky and raised her hands in praise. Through tears of joy, she cried out to God. Smiling people were running up to her. Everything she had hoped for had been fulfilled.
