Now, I was a fairly messy kid myself. I have now handed over the title of biggest mess maker to my son. He is eight, he has hobbies that border on being psycotic fixations, and he is not the least bit concerned with cleaning it up-ever.
I have quit nagging him about it. We have come to the place where we have agreed to disagree about cleanliness. There are, however, three guidelines he must follow. He must be able to reach his alarm clock in order to turn it off within two minutes. The path to the door in case of fire must be clear. The last one is where I get affected, too. Once a month or when a grandparent's visit is imminent, he must clean it all up and let me vacuum, and dust. Often I wade into the cleaning effort, too, and am rewarded by discovering many dirty socks that didn't make it to the laundry.
He does change the sheets, and he doesn't take food in there aside from the occasional chocolate. It looks like a mad scientist's lab, but it is his very own space.
It isn't always easy as a parent who likes clean spaces to deal with creative sloppiness. But the rewards in watching my kid be contentedly discovering how God makes things, and how his own creativity blossoms is worth the headache. After all, I can always just shut the door!
