It is interesting how childhood memories can linger in your mind through adulthood. One such memory is my encounter with a charging bull. It was a cool summer day, the grass was sparkling with dew in the morning sunlight. The gentle breeze made my red scarf flutter as I sat on the paddock fence watching the cows graze and calves frolic . A great big bull strolled by with large strong muscles moving handsomely under his shining brown skin.
I climbed over the fence and walked around picking the lovely wild flowers. Something made me turn around. From a distance I saw the bull glaring at me, his head raised, his front foot stamping the ground, and his breath pouring forth in great puffs like steam from a kettle on the stove. Just one look scared me. Dropping my flowers I raced to the fence climbed and jumbled over it. Turning around I saw the bull charging in full force, and skidding to a stop a few feet from the fence.
His fierce appearance, the anger in his bulging red eyes, his pointed horns and his hot breath on my cheeks carved a lasting picture in my mind. Like the daffodils in Wordsworth's poem that scene would "flash upon that inward eye in vacant or pensive mood."
It happened while I was doing a study on Old Testament in the Bible. I was reading the creation in the Book of Genesis. The love and care Almighty God took to plan the world and particularly the Garden of Eden perfect for Adam and Eve, overwhelmed me. He presented it to Adam with only one condition : Don't touch or eat the fruit of that tree in the middle of the garden.
Adam not only disobediently eat the fruit but tried to put the blame on God by saying : It is the fault of the woman YOU gave me.
That would have made God very angry. I can imagine Him chasing them out of Eden like the charging bull in my memory.(Genesis 3:24). The picture repeated itself when I read the story of Noah. God had warned the sinful nation to repent or be destroyed. They had not heeded His words. Noah and his family and the animals were all safely within the ark. Almighty God closes the door and stands facing the mocking crowd. I can imagine Him looking like the charging bull raising His hand and opening the flood-gates of heaven for the water to pour out. (Genesis 6:13). I can also imagine Him wrathfully breathing fire and brimstone on the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorah. (Genesis 19:24).
Through the generations man continues to deteriorate into a terribly sinful, wicked and rebellious people. Justice has to be executed , and the penalty paid. That is why Jesus came to earth. He paid the ransom with His precious blood on that agonizing , shameful cross at Calvary. The fiery breath of God has been calmed by the life giving atoning breath of Christ.
This is the resolution of my encounter with the charging bull : in the place of that angry bull, I see a Just, Righteous God; in the place of the fence I see a loving Savior; in the place of the terrified child, I see a happy forgiven child of God.
