If anyone ever could demonstrate an effective punch, it was and still is Mike Tyson. Fifty professional wins with forty-four knockouts is a record not soon to be beat. Not only was Iron Mike powerful but the speed the heavyweight boxer had, had never been seen before in such a large person. This combination of speed and power brought much success to him.
In Ephesians 6 Paul tells us our battles are not carnal but spiritual. We may not fight it out in a boxing ring but we still have to use our battle armour for protection from the tactics of the devil. We have a helmet of salvation, a breastplate of righteousness, shield of faith and other defensive coverings to protect ourselves.
We are only given one offensive weapon and that is the Word of God. Ephesians 6:17 (KJV)17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God:
We attack the enemy using what God has already said. His words created this universe and everything in it. It is nothing for His words to defeat anything that comes against us. When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, Jesus fought him using scripture. Jesus could have had him whooped right then with a league of angels, but the spoken word of God was all it took to shut him up and make him go away.
Paul goes into more detail in Hebrews what the sword of the Spirit does for us. Hebrews 4:12 (KJV) 12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
In the glorious word of God, we can discover what is spiritual and what is carnal. This is the division of soul and spirit. The world likes to dictate this sometimes. For example, we know as believers that any sexual sin is simply works of the flesh. The world right now is looking for a “gay” gene. Guess what? They will never find one. God has already given us the answer. Desires of the flesh are of the soul (mind will and emotions) not DNA.
Our spirit longs to be with God and desires only the things of God. That is why we become in opposition to ourselves at many times in our lives. This is when we use the Word of God to show us where we are wrong.
Every thought and intent of our hearts we could conjure, already exist in the Word. If we read it, we will find it! It is just like Solomon said, “There is nothing new under the sun.” We are to use the Word as a balance or a scale to measure our own thoughts and intents.
The Word of God (Jesus) has already done all the work to conquer any problem we come against. If we don’t know the Word of God, our sword in lying in the dirt. Pick up your sword and master it! Then, you too can have spiritual TKO’s (technical knockout) throughout your life.
