Week #7 Theme: PUNCH
America, A Divided House

Donald Trump’s presidency has experienced as much animosity between the political parties as there was during the civil war. With the Democrats moving further and further left, and the majority of the press backing the democratic party, politics is getting vicious. There is lots of bullying and sucker-punching going on by both parties, but the most unfair are those punches aimed at our president’s family.

Melania Trump, a naturalized citizen, has taken the worst of the hits. During Mr. Obama’s presidency, the movie industry and press lauded Michelle Obama’s looks and charm. Now they denigrate Melania Trump. Bette Midler reportedly called Melania an illegal alien, also mocking her English pronunciation. She later said she was sorry, but abusive words can’t be “un-remembered.” Mrs. Trump, noticeably good-looking and well-dressed, consistently gets bashed by avowed feminists for her wardrobe and lack of style. The very people who say they support the advancement of women and speak the loudest against bullying pack the most formidable punch.

President Trump has done more to protect Christians’ freedom of speech and the rights of the unborn than any other president. But he says some horrible things about other political figures. He has lost support by making degrading remarks about individuals, some of them female.

The Democrats have taken “under God” out of the pledge of allegiance. They are pro-abortion, up to and including the point of delivery. They want illegal aliens and felons to receive free medical benefits and the right to vote. Democrats are for open borders, free higher education for everyone, including people here illegally, and special LBGTQ rights legislation. Under Democratic state leaders, rioting, burning, and looting are “peaceful demonstrations.” If Trump loses a second term as president, I fear our country will slip into a dictatorship. It is this fear that causes me to speak out for the Christian values that are disappearing from America. Fear does not come from God.

The entire country has split over the coming election. I am ashamed to say I have taken part in the division. Jesus says I’m to love others, including my enemies. I’m having trouble even loving my friends who are voting democrat under the current DNC platform.

Today I must stop punching back in fear those with more liberal politics, to keep my political views from damaging my witness for Christ. I am to be concerned for the souls of lost people with whom I come in contact every day. Jesus says the unity of his followers, our love, is what distinguishes us from others. This love will draw people to God.

In his June 16, 1858, Republican nomination acceptance speech for President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln paraphrased Jesus when he said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand, it will be all one thing or all the other.” *

Only God knows the outcome of the election. Everything that happens passes first through His just, righteous hands. This week, I read Isaiah, chapters 13-23, about God’s judgment. These verses leave me concerned for those who don’t serve the God of the Bible. I need to stop my apprehension of how an election may harm our nation and myself, and pray for those with whom I don’t see eye-to-eye. Help me, God, to remember that earth is not my home, to see Your final, righteous judgment. My job is not to judge others but to love others and to serve them.

America may need to experience some colossal punches before we are humbled and turn to God.

Turning over the country to the godless liberals would be more than a colossal punch, it would be evidence God has given this country over to its depravity. But you are right in that it is really in His hands to accomplish His purposes and we are called to be faithful and useful servants no matter what.

I don't agree with everything you said, especially the generalizations, but I think you made some great points. I do appreciate that you try to represent both sides to some degree. There are some statements you make as fact that are not true. The Democrats are not trying to remove God from the pledge. During the DNC, two speakers did exclude the words, but four included them and at the beginning of each night, they were included. https://factcheck.thedispatch.com/p/did-democrats-remove-under-god-from
Another thing I found powerful is when you spoke from your POV instead of generalizing. I found myself much more open to your words and even leaned forward in anticipation. I'd encourage you to do more from your perspective because not all Democrats believe in abortion, vice versa too and not all Christian denominations support Trump. I don't think we will become united by blindly agreeing with one another. Instead, we become united by respecting each other, listening, have relevant conversations in a calm, responsible manner. You make some great points. I can feel your passion and desire to spread Jesus' love. Keep writing from your POV and do fact-checking and maybe listen to someone who doesn't agree with you on some issues in order to discover you may have more common ground than you ever thought possible. My favorite misquote is as relevant now just like it was a hundred years ago: "I may disapprove of what you say, but I'll fight to the death your right to say it." I'm against war and fighting and actually don't understand how we get to that level, yet I also strongly believe we need to be able to hear each other. So although I may not agree with everything you've said, I'm thrilled you were able to write your opinions and I have the chance to read them. Keep writing, and I'll keep reading!
