“Wait until I come to a complete stop to get out of your seats,” Mr. Fred, the bus-driver
said.
Carrie did as she was told. When the bus had completely stopped, she stood, taking Paula’s hand, and waited her turn to get off the bus.
“I’ll wait for you to cross the street Carrie” Mr. Fred said. “Be careful now.”
Carrie and Paula walked across the street, to the third house from the corner. Running in the back door they put their backpacks down by the door, plopping themselves at the kitchen table. Mom was just removing fresh cookies from the cookie sheet onto a cooling rack.
“Oh yum” drooled Carrie. “Can we have one?”
“Wait until they cool a little,” mom said.
“Do you want some milk to go with your cookies?” asked mom.
Both heads nodded yes.
“Okay, wait just a minute and I’ll get you each a glass.”
“Mom?” asked Carrie. “Why do adults use that word so often, especially with kids?”
“What word?”
“Wait.”
“What do you mean, Carrie?”
“Well, think about it mom. Its wait this, or wait that. Mr. Fred is always telling us kids to wait. Wait till the bus stops. Wait to stand up. Wait to cross the street. My teacher does the same thing.”
“Yea,” Paula chimed in. “I asked yesterday if I could have a pass to the bathroom, and Mrs. Dash said, ‘wait 5 minutes and it will be recess then you can go’.”
“You do it too mom. Wait till I finish dinner. Wait till your dad gets home. Wait in the car.”
“Waiting can be a good thing,” said mom. “Waiting means to look forward to something with expectancy. When I say ‘wait till your dad gets home’ I’m really stating we are looking forward to something good when he gets home. Like dinner being served to all.”
“Or getting punished when he gets home. I don’t see that as something to look forward to,” whispered Carrie.
“I wonder, does God ever tell us to wait?” pondered Carrie.
“Run to your room and get your Bible and let’s take a look.”
Carrie came back with her Children’s International Bible.
“Look up Psalm 5:3, then read it to me”
Carrie found the passage and read, “Lord, every morning you hear my voice. Every morning, I tell you what I need. And I wait for your answer.”
Mom went on to explain. “Every day you share your prayer requests with God. Remember how long you prayed for your new bike. Did you ever give up asking?”
Carrie shook her head.
“God seems to be telling us that sometimes we need to talk to him many times regarding our requests. We let him hear our voice. We tell him what we need. Then we stand back, get out of his way, and look forward to having our prayers answered. We expect God to answer. But God tells us to wait for him, for his timing. Answered prayer is not something we can rush. We have to wait patiently for it to happen. So, yes, God does tell us to wait. Probably more times than Mr. Fred, your teacher or even I do.”
“There’s a saying your grandma used to say to me when I was a little girl. It goes like this;
God has perfect timing; never early never late.
It takes a little patience and a whole lot of faith….
But it’s worth the wait.”
“So waiting can be a good thing?” asked Carrie.
“Absolutely! It usually is a good thing. Waiting can keep us out of trouble. Waiting can develop patience. Waiting grows our faith. Waiting gives us time to contemplate our next move.”
“Remember Carrie, whether it’s your teacher telling you to wait, your bus driver, or even me, we all want what’s best for you in the end. I’m sorry if it seems we overuse this word with you. I know I don’t do so intentionally.”
“Now, wait no more. Enjoy some cookies and milk.”
