I continued to ponder this horrific event, and my soon arrival and upcoming soggiorno (stay) in a tiny village near Rome.
“What do You think about this Lord?” I asked. “When I arrive at the station, I’ll put my suitcase in a locker, take my guitar and harmonica out on the street and I’ll sing some well-known songs, both gospel and secular. I can sing in English, French and a little in Italian.” I sensed His peace and pleasure. “Lord, please give me the strength to do this, and please use this to turn their thoughts towards You,” I prayed.
I felt nervous yet excited, in spite of the lingering feeling of shock, and the empathy I felt for the masses who didn’t know Christ. I was about to go out of my comfort zone, once again, but loving it. Me and God!
Upon arrival I headed for a nearby metro. I saw the worried expressions on people’s faces as I sang. I prayed the music and the words would make a difference, somehow, for some.
This prayer was a far cry from some thoughts I had had during one of my very low moments six months earlier in Morges, Switzerland. I was sitting on a park bench overlooking the beautiful French Alps and Lac Leman feeling totally discouraged. “Are people even listening to my songs and what I have to say? It doesn’t seem that I’m making a difference. What’s the point?”
All of a sudden I heard a faint sound of joyful music drifting through the air, seemingly from the center of town! I felt my spirit slowly begin to arise from the depth of this profound discouragement. I grabbed my purse and headed off in the direction of the music, curious to discover who they were! To my amazement, there on the main street were three gypsy men, one was playing an old battered guitar, another a well-worn fiddle, and the third was playing an accordian that had obviously seen better days! There was no one else on the street in that area. I was the audience. I stood there captivated by what I was seeing and hearing! I was so enjoying their music! Their talents brought life and joy to my downcast soul. Little did they know that God was using them to encourage me to continue playing and singing, and not to despair. I felt renewed and uplifted as I walked away, now having the strength to go to the police station the following morning, to apply for a permit to sing, and then to sing once again at the market.
It is now April 9, 2020. I am back in my own country and have my own place. The invisible Coronavirus has taken the world captive. Most people are afraid and worried; some are suicidal. A few people walk by getting their exercise. Some of my neighbours are seniors. A few stay inside and have their groceries delivered.
It is still cold. “What do you think about this Lord?” I asked. “When it warms up I’d like to sit on my front steps, or out on the patio in the back, and play a few songs on my accordian.” I sense His peace and pleasure. The music will drift through the air, into someone’s open window or to other patios, and someone’s heart will be touched, uplifted, and encouraged. One of the songs will be “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”.
