Presents. I have always liked to find the perfect present. Maybe perfect is a bit over the top. My idea of the best present should be a surprise but one that the recipient would cherish. If you asked my sisters and I about how we fare on our mother's birthday that would be another story. We have failed on many occasions where the element of surprise is concerned.

As children baking a cake at home was thoughtful. Unfortunately, it just alerted her that we were planning something. When she got back from work, she could smell the vanilla essence. Then we decided to order the cake from outside. Unfortunately, the maid paid the caterer a visit accidentally. Then she came back home and mentioned the cake to mum. On another occasion when we thought that we had nailed it, Mum opened the parcel and mentioned that she was expecting something else.

I learnt that I could not surprise her so I stopped trying. When her 70th birthday came up I went out shopping with my dad. He was very aware of all the failed attempts at surprising mum. So he took me round to different shops and asked me what would make a great present. After falling short so many times for once I had some wisdom. We could replace her microwave stove which had stopped working a year ago.

That evening when we presented the gift, mum did not see it coming. She looked at the wrapped parcel curiously. The amazement displayed on her face when she took off the wrappers was priceless. That was one of few recent successful moments.

However, God is not taken by surprise. In fact he never fails to surprise us.

Ephesians 3:20 (KJV) Now unto him that is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.

Whenever I have a challenge, sometimes I like to think that I can solve it first. Then when I am so exasperated with my thoughts I pray. Meanwhile, I keep in mind my idea of a solution some how thinking that God would use it. Each time God answers my prayers he blows me away. He does not consult and he goes the extra mile. I can never imagine how he even came up with the ideas to the answers to prayer. Thus if I can think of it, then God can do exceedingly more than what I am thinking when I ask him. Thus I needn't worry because his answers are always better than mine and full of surprises.
