"What will it be like?"
"Like a rotten tomato hitting the floor."
"I hope they will collect everything. We won't want to leave a body part behind."
A round of laughter followed suit.
The three were Imps, little devilish cousins of demons and followers of Lucifer. Lacking the leather wings, height and strength of their cousins, Imps merely filled up the numbers in the ranks. Functioning as the nuisance brigade, they pestered the mind of men. Often times they played the role of village idiot, their very survival depended on whether Lucifer was amused. Unimportant, unappreciated and expendable; they were the scum of the barrel.
But tonight was different. The three had pulled off a stunt that would be the envy of their bigger cousins. Surely their status and position within the ranks would be elevated. So they thought.
Danny had a bad day. Since the move from the countryside to the big city, his days have all been bad. School, the neighborhood and his parents new work routine were all hard to cope with.
Gone were the times of family gatherings, a glimpse of Mum and Dad was either at breakfast or dinner. Things have changed, yet for Danny change was not something he could take easily.
The days dragged on and eventhough things changed on the outside internally he was hurting. The feeling of hopelessness and depression chewed away at him day and night and unable to shake it off, he slipped deeper into a closet of self-pity and anger. A closet that offered no protection from his internal needs.
The Imps were overjoyed.
This was their playing field and they were enjoying every minute of it. They had succeeded in pushing Danny to the brink of suicide, for that is the goal of Lucifer from the beginning of time; to add souls to the flock of hell. The Imps were going to do it with Danny's soul for Danny was an innocent soul, a soul that broke under the strain of life stresses. This stress eventually drove him to decide that life was purely his to give and to take. He needed to end it (or die trying) and this took Danny to the Northpoint Bridge. The Imps plan needed one last step and Danny was ready to take it.
He stood at the edge, staring at the moonlit water below. The three Imps danced around him, encouraging him to take that last, final step.
"You don't want to be a chicken?"
"You are your own person, you decide what to do" said another.
"It will be over soon" said the third.
Danny leaned forward. It will be over soon, all the pain and all the problems. He could finally put an end to it.
"There's more to life than what you think."
Danny froze in mid thought. The Imps froze in midair.
"You can always choose to start living life rather then running away from it."
Pushing a shopping cart full of his worldly possessions, a Homeless Man walked slowly towards Danny. Stopping and looking into Danny's eyes with compassion, the Homeless Man shook his head.
"Don't do it" said the Homeless Man, "You can always start over whatever it is that you feel is not right."
All that he held within broke loose that very moment. Anger, frustration and depression flowed freely, swept away by warm tears. Danny, that innocent soul, was finally able to find release.
"It's going to be all right" continued the Homeless Man, "Never let life push you down, God takes you into new places and situations for a reason. You may not be able to see it now but it will all be revealed in due time." Danny clung to those words. A ray of light cut through his darken tunnel, at last there was hope.
"You three have done enough damage" said the Homeless Man turning to the Imps and in an instance their bodies were halved by a sword of light. Thus, their claim to fame ended at the very start of their devilish plan and I can tell you Lucifer was not impressed at all.

You painted a beautiful picture of victory over despair. Thanks for sharing.
