Orignaly she belonged to my daughter, Jennifer’s boyfriend. They got married and Raleigh joined Jennifer’s cat Flea to fill out their family. When Jennifer graduated from college, they moved in with me. After a while Jennifer left for Grad school and Raleigh became my Grand-Dog.
She had to have something in her mouth whenever she went out, a ball or one of her toys. That is unless I stood by the door and said, “Raleigh, look there’s a squirrel!” Then she would charge out the door hoping to catch it, but she never did.
When we took a walk in the park the rule was your dog needed to be on a leash, which I always did. But sometimes she would nudge me and I knew she wanted to carry her own leash, I would fold it and put it in her mouth. People got a kick out of seeing her walk herself. I was compliant she was on a leash.
Another occasion when we took a walk in Annapolis there was a real looking Black Lab sculpture in front of a store. I had Raleigh sit next to it and took a picture. It was hard to tell the difference from the real dog or the statue.
Raleigh loved her terry duck, she would lay down with her back legs sprawled out like boxers do, put her paws over the neck of the duck and suck the tail. She held on to that duck with iron jaws. She never chewed or tried to tear up any of her toys. One day when Jennifer was stressing over something, she looked at Raleigh and said, “That’s what we need a duck to suck.” A Few weeks later I saw a child in a stroller sucking on a duck. The mother had tied a toy duck to his pacifier because he was always losing it. Thought that was funny and clever.
Having a dog or pet can be a real comfort and a great companion. But it was a sad day when Raleigh got sick and we had to put her down. It would be great if they could live as long as we do. I found there is a comforter and companion that will last for much longer than pets and other loved ones. You may ask how can that be?
Have you heard of the Gospel, the good new? God created all things and even though He knew we would mess things up and not obey Him, He had a solution. Jesus, His only begotten Son, came to earth, lived a life like we do, but without sin (missing the mark) to take the punishment we deserve. He lived and died and rose again after 3 days, just as the scriptures predicted.
Before He went back to heaven His disciples were sad that Jesus was leaving them, so Jesus said, “But, the Helper (Comforter) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring it to your remembrance all that I said to you.” John 14:26.
Even though I was sad loosing Raleigh, and had many other disappointments, and troubles, I have found my relationship with Jesus and His faithful Holy Spirit to bring to mind many Scriptures that have brought comfort and healing to me. He also promises never to leave or forsake us.
If you have not met Jesus I pray that you will find Him. Jesus said,”I am the way, the truth, and the Life. No ones comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
You will have comfort that lasts forever.

The picture of Raleigh carrying his own leash certainly made me smile and brought back the memory of our then two-year-old asserting, "Me hold me own hand." And she did :)

What an intelligent dog--carrying his leash in his mouth. I'm glad the Great Comforter gave us a touch of comfort in this life.
