Did Jesus rally mean to say it is finished??
Introduction
To this day, people still want to go to the scene of the crime. Though there is nothing to see, people are willing to save up their cash and their vacation time just for a chance to go a location where the evidence had seemingly been washed away. If there is nothing there to see or visit, then why go? I’ll tell you why.
We go because we believe that there is a closeness that can be establishes if we go there. We go because we are now to a point where we seek answers. We see through a glass dimly, but the view becomes worse and worse. We want to know what happened to and with those who are responsible for this crime. And we feel that way until we find out that we are among the guilty. Isn’t that what makes Jesus the perfect Savior? Yes, but some even find cause to question His words. Who questioned His words?
The Jury came in and came in and came and more and more people were willing to find Christ guilty, and say nothing about those who sought to crucify. It doesn’t stop there! Those who feel that the Bible is a book of contradictions need only study beyond their own biases, and the answers to the questions will find them. What could they possible have to say about Jesus? They believe that He contradicted Himself also. But how?
He who was anointed Master of the Sea long before there was a sea, while on the cross, said “it is finished.” Was Christ saying that He was finished? How am I or others to interpret or come to grips with that statement? Was Jesus giving up? And we all know that Christ arose with all power and caught a redeye flight to eternity to assume His seat on the right and of the Father. Maybe those were not the words Christ wanted to say. Maybe He intended to say “I’m all done.” Or maybe Christ was trying to tell the people to “trust in Him.” Or “I have a plan.”
Or perhaps Jesus was intending to say exactly what He said. . That something truly was completed on that day. Jesus had “finished” that chapter in His life. Jesus wanted the world to know that the period of His life where he was separated from His Father and shouldering the weight of a sinful world on His shoulders was no done. Christ was not finished, salvation was not finished; but that chapter in their history was now done.
What does this mean to you or me? We should always keep in our minds that the chapter you are end will eventually come to an end... if you are currently in a chapter on sickness or financial issues, it will come to an end. IF relationships are frayed, the chapter is also headed towards the end. We should all find comfort in these words.
