Bitter turned to budding
Moaning to mown
Morning dew puddling on thawed earth
Serendipitous yet perennial breezes
Create a curious itch
Time to poke and plant
And till clods into loamy fertile ground
Curious how a dozen degrees difference
Alters souls
From aged to pliable and kind
Ready to give again and live
To lift hands and suck living water
Out of the atmosphere
Longing to taste and see and touch
In everything, God
At first blush we swallow and slurp
Until distraction starts us
Using the water for mud pies
And amateur clay pots
Summer sun will burn off
The pools collected in cracked clayware
Tears will fall to stave off thirst
Or, worse, they won’t
Better dig a well while the soil is still warm
Dig it deep
And leave it open to the rain
So in the future we won’t run dry
