No wider than the heart is wide;
Above the world is stretched the sky
No higher than the soul is high.
The heart can push the sea and land
Farther away on either hand'
The soul can split the sky in too,
And let the face of God shine through,
But East and West will pinch the heart
That can not keep them pushed apart,
And he whose soul is flat--the sky
Will cave in on him and by."
Those poignant words
from "Renascene" by Edna St. Vincent
Millay can be said about the person
that isn't a Christian. Apart from
God,a person's soul is flat. A hole
exists in the person that cannot be
filled with material possessions,
relationships, empty philosophies, or
drugs, alcohol and sex.
A non-Christian's soul remains
flat until the person encounters the
living Savior, Jesus Christ. Psalm
63:1 says, "my soul thirst for thee,
my flesh longs for thee in a dry and
thirsty land, where no water is."
Christ said in Mark 8:36, "what shall
it profit a man, if he shall gain the
whole world, and lose his own soul?"
Only when Christ's spirit enters
an unsaved soul, will the person fully
experience the light and life in Him.
When His spirit enteres, understanding
of Christ's birth, life, death and
resurrection, is fully understood.
Christ said, "come until me all you
that are heavy laden and burden." When
a person experiences Christ's
salvation, his or her soul will no
longer be flat but filled with His
hope and joy.
