“Oh Sherrie, I’m sorry. I’m not my usual happy self today. I was reading this article about all the chemicals the manufacturers put in our food. Oh, I’m all upset. I feel just like screaming. Man has literally ruined everything God intended for good. It isn’t any wonder we have so many health problems.”
Nodding my head up and down while tapping my fingers together, I raised one eyebrow and grinned. “Maggie, Maggie, Maggie, it may seem like that, but the problem is a lot deeper than just added chemicals.”
“Uh-huh! I feel a lecture coming on, Sherrie.”
I shook my finger at Maggie while giving her a quick wink. “You’re upset about all the chemicals added to foods we buy at grocery stores; well what about everything that is added to fast foods? Eating those will definitely make you sick or even kill you.” I stood with my feet slightly apart, hands on my hips and stared right at Maggie with my eyes wide open. “They don’t call it junk food for nothing. Sodas are loaded with tons of acids, high fructose corn syrup, or artificial sweeteners. French fries have so much salt it sends your blood pressure soaring, and Teriyaki chicken, which is low in fat and calories, contain high levels of sugar, sodium, genetically-modified soy, MSG and other chemicals. Is it any wonder your arteries are crying for mercy?”
“Whoa, Sherrie, calm down. Fast food is in a category all its own. That’s one of the major reasons why there is so much obesity here. People consume large quantities of it and it causes all kinds of health problems. However I was talking about the chemicals added to meats, poultry, fish, and canned goods before you buy them at the grocery stores.”
I crossed my arms over my chest. I almost felt like the culprit, but then I noticed the twinkle in Maggie‘s eyes and I scrunched up my nose and cackled. “Ah, Maggie, man’s brilliance or lack thereof--comes shining through once again.”
We doubled over, holding our sides as our laughter filled the room.
“Oh Sherrie, you have a unique way of bringing things into proper perspective and that’s another reason why I love you so much. Man cannot leave well enough alone. He has got to try and improve perfection.”
