I was never very good at walking down these cobblestone streets of Brazil with heels on, in fact, I was quite clumsy. But the worse day for cobblestones was still to come.
One day my husband tried out a bike given to us that day while working at the church on the nearly finished construction. But in his effort he decided to go down the road at the side of the church which was a steep decline toward the center of town.
When already heading down the abrupt hill, he all of a sudden tried to remember which handle was for the back brake. At his 50% chance of picking the right one, he went for it pressing the chosen handle. Sure enough it was the wrong choice, which threw him over the handle bars causing him to tumble down head first, hitting his head on the huge stones.
My husband went back to painting even though he was a bit woozy; until the pain was so great he had to stop. That night his arm hurt so much he couldn’t sleep; besides the fact his head was throbbing and had dark eyes to match his night shirt. The next morning his arm hurt even more; the deciding factor for a doctor’s visit. Our doctor friend found his arm broken and by the time he returned home, his eyes were black as could be. Here he is with his arm in a cast and two black eyes.
A couple of days later my husband performed the wedding of this lovely couple in our church. He stood before the guests that day revealing the truth of the matter, he says, “Now look!” as he directed his thoughts to the groom, “This is what will happen if you don’t listen to your wife” which brought down the roof with laughter, followed by a beautiful humorous prayer that peace would reign in their home. This all made for great wedding pictures if you can imagine.
The beautiful bride, her white dress of course was remembered, but the talk of the town was the wedding and the pastor’s black-eyed peace ceremony.
