So instead of crossing south into Laredo, Mexico, took a NW direction onto a bridge over the river at a new crossing point known as Columbia. I reckon the scant traffic gave me some afterthoughts, but figured that instead would have ample time to spare for a nice sightseeing. Soon we crossed into Mexico and paid the duties for the excess quota on the numerous presents purchased , that filled up the trunk and backseat. So we went along as planned, on a journey full of breathtaking views, as we figured earlier. And as we proceeded on that narrow two lane road, I must mention that we felt overwhelming joy, a feeling we still find hard to explain. Was it because of each other´s company ?? Was it the filtering rays of a setting sun shining through the majestic peaks ??Or, Was it the overall sightseeing process?? Who knows.
At some point before Bustamante, we lived through some harrowing experience capable of spoiling all the fun we´ve had so far. The very reason I´ m writing this humble contribution, is because some sort of miracle or divine intervention, call it as you may, pulled us away from mortal danger. Allow me to detail, those events that occurred in matters of seconds, over one unrepeatable December afternoon. To the best of my recollections, the following happened while driving our Chrysler Sedan under 50 mph, over a straight section that turned right and downhill ahead of us. The sides of the road had so poor upkeeping that tall grass covered the height of our car. Which meant that we weren´t able to see incoming traffic from the ascending curve, other than large vehicles though, and by the same token neither we could be seen. As we draw closer, we saw a pair of large crows standing in the centre of the road ahead of us, an unusual spot for those birds to be loitering seemed to me. As I saw them, also saw over the grass, the top of a Greyhound bus coming up the curve. Then out of the sudden the large black birds jumped into the air, flapping their wings while cawing aloud as if trying to draw attention. In a split second their unusual display seemed like a warning, making me hit the brakes slowing the car to an almost complete stop. And then immediately, an unseen car speeding inside the curve over-passed the Greyhound bus invading our lane, at a distance less of one car from hitting us head on. We only saw a blurred image ahead of us, and still remember the ashen face of the Greyhound driver looking as surprised as myself. We were frozen by the sensation of having had a near brush with death, because there was no way we could have survived a head-on collision, hadn´t we slowed down. Over my left I could see the airborne crows turning their heads, as if checking that all was fine. Cawing never sounded so good.
After this stirring experience, all we cared for was to get home safe, ever thankful for God´s assistance keeping us from harm´s way. Which in this momentous occasion took the shape of angels wearing black tuxedos. Regardless of the near crash, this turned out to be the most enjoyable ride I ever had with Sylvia, and needless to say, the best Christmas our Lord spared us for.
