I was planning the trip of a lifetime. I was going to Europe. After having received an invitation from a distant relative, I began the process with anticipation. What do I need to pack? What will I need for a month of traveling? I needed a new suitcase, but that was minor. The most important item for the trip was to secure a passport.

I went to the Federal Building in downtown Minneapolis, found the right office, and stood in line. Finally it was my turn at the counter. After taking down all of my pertinent information, the official had me pose for a passport photo. In a few weeks, my all-important document arrived in the mail.

I inspected it carefully. Besides stating my basic information, date and place of birth, nationality, one other piece of information impressed me. On the top part of the document it stated that the Secretary of State of the United States of America requests all it may concern, to permit me to pass or enter their country without hindrance or delay. Wow! The United States of America is standing behind me. They are vouching for me! It may seem silly, but that made me feel valued.

After my plane touched down in Frankfurt, and I claimed my luggage, it was time to go through customs. Thank goodness for suitcases on wheels. I pulled mine along with apprehension as I headed for the customs gate. I had never done this before. My purse, which contained my passport, was slung around my neck.

When I reached the customs gate, I let go of one suitcase, reached into my purse and showed my opened passport to the official. After briefly looking at my picture and me on the valid United States passport, he waved me through. I had not expecting it to be so easy. Even though I was just a tourist, I was expecting search and delay.

Then, a great truth dawned on me. Some day I will make another trip, one much more important than the present one, a heavenly trip. Some day I will stand in front of another gate, where the gatekeeper will ask for my passport. All the silver and gold, good deeds and intentions, that I may have packed in my life suitcase will not get me in. That will be considered as good as trash. The gatekeeper or porter will look for one thing only, the stamp of Jesus Christ visible on my person. That is my heavenly passport. That means that Jesus himself is standing behind me, is vouching for me.

As soon as the gatekeeper sees that, he will open the gate and let me enter.
