I recently had the opportunity to visit a private beach in Bermuda with a group of coworkers. Everyone was excited at this rare opportunity, and while most people were anticipating the swimming and sunbathing, I went with the intention of collecting seashells. I knew that I would have plenty to choose from at such a luxurious beach.
Each summer I made a point of gathering seashells to send to the little girl that I sponsored. I would then send these beach jewels to her as part of her Christmas gift. It was my small way of sharing my summer fun with her, and it also let her know that she was on my mind even in the midst of my summer time activities.
Bermuda boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and the Mid Ocean Beach was no exception. I removed my sandals so that I could wiggle my toes in the inviting pink sand. I then started off on my mission with a clear plastic cup and a few friends that were eager to assist me.
In the beginning we found very little shells until suddenly my coworker, Anita, exclaimed, “Look at what I found!” As I moved closer I was delighted to see a flawless pink and white shell. From then on the shells were plentiful and the cup soon sparkled with colors of pink, yellow and white shells.
As we strolled along the beach another coworker, Laverne, exclaimed, “Come and see this seahorse!” We all hurried over and were amazed to see this exquisite creature up close. It had washed up on the beach and was barely alive. Laverne poured some water over it using a jug she had found nearby. Then Anita carefully scooped it up and returned it back to the sea.
On our way back to the where our sandals were located I spotted a Bermuda long tail. It was a majestic sight to behold. Anita captured a few shots of the black and white bird with her digital camera. It was obvious that it was trying to protect a nest that appeared to be located in the crevices of the cliff that surrounded the beach.
Bermuda is a country that is blessed by God. Although geography books state that it was formed out of a volcano I truly believed that only a God of infinite creativity and imagination could have designed something so unique. His mighty hands crafted the cliffs that surround the island. The imprints of His feet created the depths of the ocean, and His breath provided the cool breeze that whispers along the seashores.
When I headed out for the beach that day I never dreamed that I would walk away with more than the seashells. As we uncovered the treasures that were hidden in the pretty pink sand I realized that I had also uncovered a new appreciation for the beauty found in nature. I thanked God for the opportunity to be in the presence of His creativity.
At the end of the day I carefully secured my little cup of summer and I smiled as I imagined the delightful look on the face of my sponsor child as she unwrapped her Christmas present. I would include a letter with her gift that would tell her all about my adventures on the beach that day. In the middle of December she would learn a lesson of how my soul was unexpectedly blessed as I filled a simple plastic cup with the awesome wonder of God’s creation on a warm day in July.
