filled with balls and clubs; shoes and a rag
Yet to be used, it is new and clean
hoping it will be carried out to the green
It was the two of them, his father and he
on a small course, a simple par three
Son said he never played this game before
father said that’s O.K., we won’t keep score
After several holes, son wasn’t that pleased
because all his shots kept hitting the trees
He was frustrated and started to frown
and soon apologized for slowing them down
Father gave him a smile and said "it’s O.K."
"we don’t have to rush, we have all day"
He then taught him the fine art of the game
told him to swing, and not to aim
Keep your head down, and watch the ball
and not at the spot that it would fall
Take a few swings, and try not to worry
you need to slow down, don’t be in a hurry
Hanging in the garage is a black golf bag
filled with balls and clubs; shoes and a rag
Father and son, together they play
a round of golf and enjoy the day
"Golf is a simple game", said father to son
"and it can also be a lot of fun"
Yet frustrated, son started to shout
"I don’t get what this game is about!"
He knew father was trying his best to teach
but son was too stubborn to let the words reach
So son did it his way, and became more upset
and said a few things that he would later regret
Father would visit, but no golf would they play
son still remembers what happened that day
Yet golf was his passion, and father still played
while son shied away, with confidence frayed
Hanging in the garage is a black golf bag
filled with balls and clubs; shoes and a rag
No longer used, it is shoved aside
awaiting for son to swallow his pride
Son grew up and would golf with a friend
but a few months later, hard feelings would mend
When father showed up, and asked son to try
"Playing golf again, just you and I?"
From then on, whenever son was in town
they would get together to play a quick round
Golf became a chance for them to talk
or sometimes they just enjoyed the walk
Now son didn’t mind when he would get teased
when he still kept hitting tree after tree
Looks like father had taught him a lot
whether son wanted to admit it or not
Carried on a shoulder, is a black golf bag
filled with balls and clubs; shoes and a rag
Glad to be used more and more
instead of just hanging behind the door
Just when things were looking so good
life didn’t turn out like son thought it would
The time for golfing became harder to find
as fighting cancer was on father’s mind
Father fought hard, but the disease had won
and ended a life that was filled with fun
There won’t be any more golf games to share
only memories of father and son, alone, out there
Hanging in the garage is my black golf bag
filled with balls and clubs; shoes and a rag
I don’t play golf anymore these days
but I know that in heaven, my father still plays
