Although, the children are much older now, they love to remind me of the year the chocolate bunnies had a meltdown. When I look back, I realize the symbolism in the whole event. Our salvation experience is a meltdown of sorts. A meltdown or death of self, before new life begins.
Christ, although without sin, took the world’s sin upon Himself and put it to death on the cross. When we come to the point in our lives that we see our sinfulness and our need for the sacrifice Christ made for us, we need to die in order to live a new life full of the Holy Spirit. We need to have a spiritual meltdown.
I couldn’t resurrect the chocolate bunny. The best I could do was put it in the refrigerator and let the misshapen blob harden so it could be enjoyed later. I couldn’t give it life again and make it whole but Christ’s resurrection from the dead is proof that He has the power to make new life happen in your life and mine. This whole process is referred to in the bible as being “born again.” Imagine that, Christ’s Holy Spirit lives in us!
In fact unless we’re born again, we cannot enter the kingdom of God. The thought of spending eternity without God in a place of torment, reserved for the devil and his followers compels me to accept His sacrifice by faith. That great sacrifice was His life, for yours and mine.
Easter in our house was always full of mishaps. One year we found broken shells from our decorated eggs under the dining room table and all over the house. Our curious cat had devoured the colorful treats, hours spent in the making, during the night. Sometimes I hid the Easter treats so well that we often found them months later. What a delight they were to the taste buds after months of collecting dust bunnies of their own.
One of the most valuable memories however is looking back at the photos of our family, dressed in our best Sunday attire, especially the girls in their Easter bonnets, before our trip to church. Here we would hear the tragic but wonderful story of a man named Jesus with the greatest gift of all. He laid down his life for yours and mine.
What amazing love!
Hallelujah!
