Games shows are entertaining, fun and for the most part are family friendly entertainment, but gone are the days of “Family Feud”, “Password” and “Hollywood Squares”, just to name a few, where the contestants competed against each other for the prize money. They usually went home with a little more than they left home with, because there was usually at least a complimentary game that they were given, even if they didn’t win the game itself.
Today’s games are not against other opponents. Games such as “Deal or No Deal”, “Do You Want to be a Millionaire”, or “Are you Smarter Than a 5th Grader” are against themselves, and at the very least, the contestant will walk away with what they walked in with. So what does this new generation of game shows cultivate? What are we saying about what we are learning as a society?
The way these game shows work is that a participant starts off working their way to small amounts of money by answering simple questions correctly; then the larger the money prize that you try for the harder the questions are going to be. When certain levels are hit, for example $25,000, the contestant can be guaranteed to keep that amount IF they stop now. However, if they want to go for $50,000 but answer the next question incorrectly, then they go home with nothing. Sadly, most of the contestants not only walk out empty handed, they also walk out with a little less self-esteem.
So what does this instill in us as a society? It shows that we should not be happy or satisfied with what we have been blessed with; it also shows that we think we deserve more than what we have, even if what we have is already more than what we need.
