Wini rushed to her unpainted ranch style house, probably built in the early 1900s. Paint or no paint it was her home. Cozy and clean inside. Home because her farm family was always there.
This afternoon, however, something was different. She pushed open the door to find her mother and a neighbor sitting quietly in the dining room near the round “Warm Morning” heating stove.
Wini stopped short, breathless, quiet and still. Unusual for the energetic ten year old.
Something was wrong, but what?
“Your brother is gone, he’s left home,” her mother said.
“Why mama?”
“ Daddy and he had a quarrel. Your sister Liz and Daddy are looking for him now.”
Daddy, you are so harsh, don’t you know that Bob is a man now? He’s driven a six team hitch of horses for years. He’s constantly helped you in the fields. He has worked so hard and you need to listen to him.
These thoughts rambled through Wini’s mind. Bob, nine years older, was special to her. He had intervened for her many times and softened the harsh words often sent her way.
Other times Bob even did her chores. He’d gather the cobs for the cook stove and bring in coal for the “Warm Morning” so that she wouldn’t have to go out into the cold
He’d grin and say that Mama had “running water” as he carried it in from the well, because he ran with a bucket in each hand and filled the reservoir on the big black cook stove every day.
Bob fed and miked the cows, turning the handle on the machine that separated the cream from the milk. He picked corn by hand, and, yes, he had new ideas. But now he was gone.
Where would he go? What would he do? What would he eat, and where would he sleep?
Serious thoughts were running through Wini’s mind. Why? Why? Why?
Then she heard it. The family’s 39 Chevy coming up the drive. It stopped in front of the gate. Wini ran to the window, pushed the lace curtain aside and watched. Are they? Is he? There were two, and yes, one more. Bob! Home. We were together. One, not two. Family.
