This is a true story from my high school days. We were a family of six in a two-bedroom home, which tells how creative Mom was with bedroom placement. My bed was in the foyer by the front door. I was never fond of being by the front door, since anything that entered would find me first or so was my thinking. One summer in particular there had been a rash of reports that a “peeping Tom” was showing up in our neighborhood. Now not only was I by the front door, but I slept in an old sleigh bed pushed up against the window.
I said all that to show you my mental state going to bed each night. One night I roused slightly awake to turn over when, WHAP! Something hit me up side the head. It was somebody’s arm lying across my head! I slept alone! Oh, God in Heaven, somebody’s in bed with me! I just knew it was the peeper. My breathing was shallow so I wouldn’t alert the perpetrator that I was aware of his presence…Maybe it might buy me some time to figure a way to save myself. Lying there seemed like hours, but I’m sure it was more like seconds. I know that it was seconds, for my life hadn’t had time to pass before my eyes! Surprisingly I began to feel a tingling sensation in the fiend’s arm. Huh? How could this be? Why, I could move the man’s fingers! To my surprise the villain was just I. It was my own arm that I had been lying on cutting off the circulation, so as I turned it fell like dead weight across my head. I was my enemy!
Thank God all I had was a surprise, for if I had a weapon…this page would be blank!
