I try to place a count on numberless stars, to no avail. I attempt, with more success, to picture the vastness of the universe, and consider how our galaxy is but one of many. I reflect on the intelligence and power of the Being who created it all. Then I marvel at the thought that He knows me by name. He loves me as high as the heavens are above the earth. I draw my eyebrows together—how high is that? I don’t know, but I imagine that it’s quite a long distance.
My attention is arrested by the melodious music of birds overhead. I cock my head to one side and listen for a while. I think about the wondrous creativity of the Maker of all living things; the myriad of fish in the sea, the beasts on land, and the birds in the air. Not one bird falls to the ground without Him being aware of it. It warms me to think that I mean much more to Him than those birds.
I ponder the greatness of the God of the earth and sky, and the beauty of the planet He’s placed us on. He loved me before the foundation of the earth…hmmm…that means He’s known and loved me before the time of ancient Rome, before Moses, before the dinosaurs walked the earth…that’s an awful long time!
I contemplate the uniqueness of the Most High God. One word to describe Him would be “other.” He’s simply unlike any other. He’s much more than a cut above the rest. Hence I am dumbfounded by His humility, that He would want to call me His friend.
I consider the sturdy oak tree I’m sitting under—God’s like that—strong and steadfast. I try to imagine what it must have cost the King of the universe to leave His throne in heaven—all His glorious splendor—and to come to this lone planet out of many, and hang on another tree. That the Author of life would give up His life is remarkable. That He would do it for me is astounding.
I open my eyes and take in the rich palette of vibrant colors around me—all a gift from my Creator-God. Nature speaks of Him. His fingerprints are everywhere. I stand on tiptoe and stretch towards the sky, trying to touch it; wondering once again about the distance between the heavens and the earth. I slip and fall onto the carpet of bluebells beneath me and begin to giggle. I lie flat on my back and spread my arms outward. Somehow I know He’s laughing with me, sharing my joy.
My soul wells up with awe and gratitude.
