Topic: Thanksgiving (04/18/05)
The little brown –haired girl with one tooth missing in her smile sat in her first grade desk ready to meet her destiny. She quivered in anticipation as she looked upon the colorful book on her desk. She opened it and there displayed before her was a pretty picture of a boy and girl racing after a spotted dog. They looked pink-cheeked and happy as they chased the pooch. At the bottom of the page a four-lettered word stood at attention. The little girl looked at the word expectantly. L-O-O-K. She spelled it to herself. Soon----soon, she thought, wiggling in her seat. Hurry up, Mrs. Elliot, I’ve got to know NOW.

I remember that day vividly. My first reading word in my first reading book. Could life get any better than this? I had been wanting to learn to read forever, by myself, for myself. Untold worlds awaited my discovery. And I could go there myself as a big girl. Finally I was learning to read.

I have loved, no, adored, been swept away by reading books ever since. Books have taken me to places I could never afford to go to or imagined on my own. I’ve learned about people, the inner lives we all lead, experienced happenings that I could never experience in my own place and time, seen colors and heard sounds that did not exist for me until I discovered them in books. It would be impossible to number the amount of books, articles, or even cereal boxes I have read in my long life. I love the reading life. For me it is a part of paradise.

Now I have decided to not just be a partaker, but a creator of those wonderful constructions of words. Novels, poetry, essays. I want them to run down from the thoughts of my head to the fingertips on the computer keys onto the computer page.
I want to sow them like seeds onto fertile ground and watch my tales grow and feed a waiting community.

Words come from God. Jesus is the Word. What a great gift from a great Father! As I write this I am in love with Jesus and his gift of words. I say a prayer of Thanksgiving for words. That is what Thanksgiving is all above. Realizing the love you have for one of God’s precious gifts and thanking him for giving the gift. Thank God for Words.

You took me with you back to my first day in first grade with my first reader. I bought a copy of one last year. The great thing about the written word is that after you have uttered your last word on this earth, what you have written can continue to be a blessing to others. In a sense, we live on. Good story. Thanks for taking me with you.
