There is a christian song that talks about God singing over us, but us not being able to hear. When we first read the lyrics my friends and I debated over whether we could or could not hear His songs. No real conclusions were met, but we were left with a real longing to hear that sound.

Zephaniah 3:17 in the NIV states, “The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” It was comforting to see that God does rejoice over me with singing, just as I praise Him with my voice. I have every confidence that he hears my praises, could I hear His?

One Saturday I was sitting alone in my home office. My family was gone, no one was due home for hours. I was enjoying the peace and the absolute stillness when I started to hear a noise. It was distinct and melodic. It sounded like an orchestra of voices and instruments melding together. I enjoyed it for a moment thinking someone had left the television on. I walked through the living room and the bedroom and the TV screens were black. No CD’s left playing, nothing. I could now only faintly hear the sound as a peace flooded over me. I sat back down in my office with a new appreciation for the stillness. I only remembered feeling that type of peace one other time.

I had been at an outdoor auction with my parents. It was cold and windy. I opted to return to the truck and sit. The cars were crammed closely together and the wind howling through them made a beautiful sound. I remembered closing my eyes and listening intently to each pitch, each note that God created that day. It seemed like hours that I sat in that car as peace surrounded me.

It was the same that day in my office. I choose to believe God gave me a glimpse of His rejoicing. In a time when the stillness of His peace overpowered the noise of my life I heard His joy. What a beautiful sound.

You captured the experience beautifully with your words: “…distinct and melodic.” “…an orchestra of voices and instruments melding together.” Reading about your appreciation for the stillness reminded me of Psalms 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.” One of my favorite verses. Thanks for sharing.

I really enjoyed reading about this encounter with heavenly music--it's very much like what a friend of mine experienced, and kind of like something I once did also. (In my case, I felt a "taste" of heaven during a prayer meeting, though I heard no music.)

It would be good to open this story with the third paragraph--that one is what grabbed me and drew me in with the specific anecdote described.

I liked the way the second incident was also described, and the two tied together at the end. Also liked the descriptive verbs "flooded," "howled," and "crammed."
