The sun was shining and the day was hot when I arrived to pick up my four year old grand-
daughter. Jessica was more excited than usual about going swimming. She was finally tall
enough to be allowed to play in the 3-foot end of the pool.
Before long she had struck up a friendship with another little girl playing in the pool. All
was going great until a little boy decided to aggravate them by splashing water in their faces.
I watched them carefully. I thoroughly expected Jessica to try to dunk him if he didn't stop.
Instead, she moved away from him, doing or saying nothing. He wasn't going to give up that
easy. He trailed them and kept on with the aggravation. This action was bound to get him
dunked. Surprisingly, she gracefully glided through the water even farther away from him. At
this point her new found friend decided to get rid of him and chased him off.
I pondered the situation. Maybe her Mom and Dad had convinced her that being aggressive
wasn't the nicest thing to do.
The day was nearing its end as I sat and rocked baby Camden while Jessica's evening bath
was being supervised by her mommy. In the distance I could hear her excitedly sharing her day
"Mommy, I met another mean boy today, " Jessica declared.
"You did. Why do you think he was mean?" her mommy inquired.
"He splashed us girls and got water in our eyes," Jessica replied.
"Maybe he wouldn't have been mean if you had been nice to him," her mommy admonished.
"No Mommy, I didn't do anything to him. I had the wisdom of God all over me!" she
declared indignantly.
An abundance of joy weld up within. Smiling, in complete delight, I whispered a prayer of
thankfulness to God for His promises. Obviously, the time she had spent listening during her
mother's Bible study classes were very important for planting truth and instilling character in her
young little life.
