Here's how it reads..........
I was born in Atlanta, Georgia and grew up with my Momma and brothers in a small 4 room house.
We were very poor and most the time were lucky to have beans and rice once a day. Everyone at school knew I was poor because the clothes I wore were faded and patched. During recess and lunch break, I would sit on the back steps of the school and watch the other children eat their sandwiches and play. I could hardly wait till school was out so I could get home and have our one daily meal, a bowl of beans and rice. I was so hungry that I cried a lot, but knew Momma was doing the best she could for us kids.
I was proud of my family because we were taught that God would provide and none of us ever stole or begged.
I got to the ninth grade only because my brothers went to work to help out.
We moved to Jackson, Mississippi and I too dropped out of High school and took a job at the Hydelburg Hotel as an elevator operator. Sometimes my tips were as much as $5.00 and I would hurry home to give it all to Momma so she could buy the things we needed.
At 18 I got married, and over the years had 6 children from a husband that never loved me. I would cook and clean and take care of my babies, and he would go out drinking and dancing and chasing other women. He spent most of his money having a good time and I was left alone a lot. I remember all the lonely days and nights and him coming home drunk and only wanting me because he was full of booze and in the mood. Yet I loved him and would wash his feet and put his socks and shoes on him every morning before he left for work.
The greatest joy in my life were my children. I raised them right and they were good kids. I taught them the love of Jesus, and that no matter what happens in your life, God loves you.
I moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1950, because my marriage was broken and Momma wanted me to go with her.
I took a waitress job at a soda fountain and raised my children on very meager wages. It looked as if they too were going to suffer the same fate as I did in my childhood. I remember many days getting out of bed, my body aching from standing on my feet for 9 to 10 hours a day serving customers. I was sick a lot because our nutrition was poor, but went to work everyday anyway. Sometimes I would have a high fever and vomiting, but the kids needed food and clothing, so I would walk to work in the freezing cold, work all day and walk home in the dark.
I did this for till I was in my late fifties and my children worked and helped me out as soon as they were able to go to work themselves. They all grew up to be fine children and some of them even got a college degree.
My children know what it is to work hard and do without. I am so proud of them all. They have been taught the Lord since they were babies and each one knows the Lord well, I could not have ask for more. God is good ain't He? He gave me and my children the best things in life, His love and His Son Jesus, and we shall live forever in eternal glory in His kingdom,....no more beans.
