There are many ‘firsts’ in a lifetime. A first birthday is reason for our first party. Baby books document first teeth, first words, and first steps. We enter first grade, go on first dates, and tremble over first kisses. That first job, first car, or first child can make us feel as if we have achieved a milestone in life.
We look forward to ‘first things’ and later look back in fond remembrance at those same ‘first things.’ Because we mark the passage of time by our experiences, ‘first things’ are special. A marriage has a first anniversary, a first Christmas, and sometimes a first child. First things are generally seen as happy things.
Sometimes comparisons of our ‘firsts’ to the ‘firsts’ of others can bring feelings of inadequacy. Suddenly, to be who and where we are in life may not seem enough. When tempted to fall into this trap, we must remember that we are originals, uniquely created by our heavenly Father: “My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret…. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.” - Psalm 139:15&16, NKJV.
We must have an attitude of celebration, for we ourselves are a ‘first.’ “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” - Ephesians 2:10, NKJV. We are unique originals created by our Father to accomplish special things for Him in His kingdom. This is cause for celebration. Do not try to be something or someone you are not, but be happy being yourself. You are one of a kind, the first and last of that kind. God does not have a Xerox machine!

Thank you for your lovely reminder of who we are....we forgot...often. Looking in someone's eyes, we can see the reflection of God, but often it lies buried beneath so many layers of 'trying to be.' Struggling with insecurities my entire life, a daily dose...or hourly dose...of the truths you wrote is a path to contentment and peace. After all...God doesn't make mistakes, either.
