Don’t you just hate to get to the last page of a really good book? You know; the sequel kind that keeps you hanging? You’re dying to know what’s going to happen next, but you have to wait until the writer finishes his next book to find out. Sometimes that can take months!
And long lines! Oh my soul, if there is a long or slow line, I guarantee you, I’m there! I seem to have this little demon that follows me to the bank or grocery store. He’ll say “choose this line, (in his evil little voice) it looks like the shortest one”. Then he just laughs and laughs and laughs when the teller runs out of tape or the cashier has to get a price check. I hate that little guy! Oh well, enough about him.
Think about the last page in the Bible for a moment. Revelation 22:14 (KJV) says: “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.”
This verse on the last page of the Bible promises if we keep Christ’s commandments we will be blessed, enter into the holy city and partake freely of the tree of life. What a glorious anticipation! Sometimes, I can hardly wait to get there. My spirit says to His spirit: Come, Lord Jesus. Come.
I dreamt I died and went to heaven
Standing outside the pearly gate.
With many folks ahead of me,
In another line I had to wait!
“Oh no! Not here, too!” I cried,
(For patience is not my best trait.)
Here I was, so anxious to enter in,
As I’m sure you can relate.
Above the multitude of people,
I could see the Tree of Life.
With large and beautiful branches,
Luscious fruit, plump and ripe.
The streets of gold I couldn’t see,
Though tiptoeing with all my might,
When I heard a voice behind me say,
“I just can’t wait to see my wife”.
Then I realized we were all waiting,
And I was no better than the rest,
We were all sinners saved by grace,
Of that, we couldn’t protest.
We’d finished our race, turned our last page,
And yet, still to come was the best.
We stood one last time, in our very last line,
Waiting to enter the city of the blessed.
Just before I got to the front of the line,
I woke up, (much to my despair!)
I wanted to see Jesus, my heavenly home,
And all the beauty and wonder that’s there.
I suppose God’s teaching me patience again,
(Sometimes, life just doesn’t seem fair!)
But one day I know I will turn my last page,
And enter into my home in the air!
