Admitting defeat, I wandered out to the kitchen for some hot cocoa. Outside, frogs hummed rhythmically, a light rain waking them from a season’s slumber and soothing me. Once the cocoa was made, I snuggled down into the recliner, warmth seeping through my hands to the rest of my body.
As I began to relax, my thoughts turned again to my mixed up life. How was it that the Creator of the universe didn’t seem able to control my life enough to make my kids obey, have the car start the first time, or give me a good night’s rest? Still wondering, I felt myself at last slipping into a deep sleep.
It must have been hours later when I awoke. Though the rain had ceased, a cool gentle wind caressed my face in the darkness. Overhead the sky had cleared, the stars glittering in their velvet black canopy.
Hang on. Why were there stars glittering in my lounge room? I looked around, realising suddenly that I was no longer at home. I should have been afraid. I should have cried for help. I should have at least been complaining about this, the most out of control moment in my life. Yet strangely, I didn’t do any of these things.
Leaning back into the hillock against which I sat, I watched the birth of the most glorious sunrise I had ever been privileged to witness. The air itself seemed alive, not just with the light of dawn, but with the effervescence of life and joy and purity. I felt a quiver of anticipation and excitement that came less from my heart than the world around me. Something was about to happen.
A warm breeze passed.
As it did so, life burst into being behind it. Newly created life, frolicking in the exuberance of new existence. And I was here to witness it. I sank back into the grass and closed my eyes, bathing in the glory of the moment.
All was black when I opened them once more. I could sense, more than see, that I had left Creation. Images began to flash before my eyes, like an almighty slide show. The Incarnation. Only minutes ago I had seen God’s handiwork as omnipotent Creator. Now He was just a helpless babe. The Creating Word had become the Created Word.
Flashes of His life followed. It was not an easy life, one lived in submission, first to His parents, and always to the Father. I came to see that in many ways His life resembled my own. Problems arose, people were demanding, even cruel. Sometimes everything seemed to be out of control. This was though, just an illusion. I had seen His creative work. I knew His omnipotent power. He could never, even for a second, lose control.
A distant beeping broke my reverie. My eyes opened again in my own home. I had returned to my own life, with all its worries and troubles. Only now I knew. There was no chaos or maddening turmoil. My Creator was in control of everything.
