Ever experienced the rush of a tidal wave against your face? A group of close buddies and I took a trip to the beach recently. The sun was high up in the sky, the water had an irresistible clear blue inviting presence. The day started out easy and uneventful, after a few shots at volley ball and a sorry attempt at winning, I opted for a swim in the cool waters.
I started out just wadding in and out of the water; low tides, cool breeze, nothing unusual. As the tides rose gradually, my friends joined in and we dared to move deeper into the open sea. We confidently kept moving deeper and deeper into the water; the further we went the stronger the tides became, or so it seemed. The venture became more daring, quite interesting, more like challenging, keeping up with the strength of the waves. Then in one instance a wave rose and gulped us down below water level. Thrown off guard and disoriented I struggled to gain balance and keep my head above the water. The more frantic my efforts, the stronger the force of the waves became and the lower my chances of regaining balance.
I felt a high concentration of salt water in my eyes and mouth and gasped for air as I struggled to regain my balance. For a split second my thought went blank and just as quickly as they blanked out, a strong arm grabbed me from the side and helped me stabilize. With the grip of iron around my waist, my friend and I made it to the safety of the shore and for the first time sand felt good beneath my bare foot. We laughed as we dropped to the ground in exhaustion each trying to catch their breath. Well that was all for deep water swimming that day, we retired to our quite spots and opted for refreshments.
All the way home I wondered at the event of the day and what could have happened if we didn’t make it back to shore. I have never had the feeling of losing it, but in that instance when the wave pulled me below, a word flashed through my mind - When life suddenly spins out of control like the rush of salt water around your exhausted body; God’s iron grip would guide you back to safety, if only you’d believe.
