Topic: TV (10/04/18)
A host of angels gathers into the breakroom as their shifts end.



"Turn on the tv," one of them calls, "I want to see what's going on with that guy, Chris. Did he make it through his trial yet? Satan's been tempting him pretty bad, all week."



One of the angels turns on the tv, "I don't know," he answers, "I think this was the last day of his testing. I didn't hear the news, but I hear Jezebel was down there tempting him pretty hard."



"Oof, every man's weakness," another angel answers, taking a seat on the couch, "I wonder how he did."



"I have faith in him," the first angel answers, "I mean, he's no Joseph son of Israel, but he doesn't seem like the type to fall prey to pretty women."



"Do you hear yourself?" the third angel answers, "Not fall prey to pretty women?! Must I remind you of Samson? King David? King Solomon?! All led astray by looking at pretty women. Joseph son of Israel was the exception. This guy's a goner, for sure."



"I hate to say it," the second angel interjects, "but he may be right. Satan sent Jezebel out there to tempt him in his moment of weakness. He was praying for a wife, remember? God was going to give him one, but Satan asked to test him first. If Chris is desperate, he may not make it through this test. God knows I hope he does, but men don't have a very good record in these types of trials."



"Where is your faith?!" the first angel answers, incredulously, "Does God allow men to be tempted beyond what they can bear?"



"No" they both answer.



"Is He not just?"



"He is."



"So God is able and faithful to keep him from the snares of Satan."



"Yes, but-" the third angel starts.



"But nothing," the first one interrupts, "I believe in Chris and I believe in God."



The first angel sits down on the couch next to the third angel, and the second one joins them.



"You have enough faith in this boy to place a bet on him?" the third angel asks.



"What kind of bet?"



"If I'm right, and Chris fails this test, you have to do prayer duty for the next week. It's all fun and games delivering messages every now and then, or being like those cherubim singing kumbaya around the throne, but prayer duty is serious work. You gotta go down, find the prayers, get the bowl of incense, keep it from falling out while you fly all the way up to heaven, place it in the right part of the throne room, and then do it again about a million more times."



"He's right," the second angel says, "prayer duty is how I sprained my left wing, once. Don't get me started on those prayer warriors who take 'pray without ceasing' literally. You'll have to carry about 10 tons of incense from their houses each day! And that's just the house! They get incense everywhere! In their car, on the streets, at their jobs, everywhere! Oy vey! You have to really believe in this kid to agree to a bet like that."



"I do," the first angel says, "I agree to the bet. I know Chris isn't going to let the devil get to him. He's a strong kid. The Lord is with him to help him."



The second angel facepalms, and the third one smiles, propping his feet up on an ottoman.



"Well, let's see what you've gotten yourself into," the second angel says, turning on the TV.



The angels watch Chris on TV. He is reading the Bible, in a nightclub, trying not to look at the scantily clad women who are around him. I perfectly manicured hand covers the page he is reading. He looks up to see a woman in a short black dress.



"I've been watching you read for the past thirty minutes. I thought I'd come over here and offer you a good time. Mind taking me home?"



"I'd love to," he answers.



As they are driving, he tells her that he only agreed so he could tell her that Jesus loves her. He shares the gospel with her on the way home and drops her off at her house.



The first angel laughs happily, "He did it! He overcame the final test!"



The angels praise God, who gives such grace to men; then happily return to their work.

This is so funny! I love it. I'm still laughing as I type these words. Here's a favorite line: "And that's just the house! They get incense everywhere! In their car, on the streets, at their jobs, everywhere!"

Your title opened a different door to what I was expecting, but you developed credible imagery that kept me with you. I liked your close, though the witnessing scenario placed Chris in a potential set-up for further temptation if he were to be the lady's prime source of future counsel. Despite that concern, congrats on a unique perspective.

Yes, if only we would use God's grace instead of abuse it.
Would we need God's grace if we were where we really should be and doing what we should be doing?

Look at stories from the other side to get a full picture of what it looks like.
