My father likes to say that he has two speeds...Slow and Reverse. Anytime something needs to be fixed you can always count on Poppy to do it. (This is the kind of guy who would look at Niagra Falls and say “I think I can fix that.”) Now I’ll grant you that the “fixing” may not take place during our lifetime, but it will get fixed.
This got me to thinking about Pop’s two speeds. It IS true that he is slow and methodical but the thing that impresses me is that he always starts. He doesn’t “hem & haw” about the task at hand. If the car won’t go or if the plumbing is clogged or if his son needs help getting away from drugs or alcohol...He just starts.
Wouldn’t it be great if everything worked that way? Imagine never having to coax your car or plead with the ATM or beg for a waiter or even worse a doctor to just START. Most people can stand the tediousness of the process if they at least know that work has begun. The wheels are in motion. I’m always impressed with the quote “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”.
What’s stopping you right now?
Do you need to quit smoking or drinking? Do you need to lose weight? Do you want an education or a better job? What about that vacation that you’ve been planning? Do you want to say “hello” to someone special...maybe even “I really do love you”?
And if you wait for a while, will it really help anything?
Start right now. You’d want it done for you! You’d want the “I love you” or the vacation or the job or the doctor to say “we’ve begun the procedure” or at least to get the darned plumbing project underway.
And keep in mind that Poppy would be proud of you.
