One particular decision from my teen years now brings back fond memories. A well-intentioned friend volunteered their car for my driving test. Pride slid into that front seat as I imagined myself cruising around in something a little flasher than Dad's old, white sedan. Having a similar model to Dad's vehicle, however, was not enough to put me at ease behind the wheel. I can admit, now, to not being ready for the test. Let's just say that cutting a corner during a turn – no matter how miniscule the cut – was the final humiliation in a very long driving test. I slunk back to the Motor Registry with a noticeably silent instructor in the passenger seat. Dad's car proved to be adequate for the task the following week. My pocket was also ten dollars lighter for the privilege of having to retake the test. Back then, I knew nothing of verses like: "Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility comes before honour." Proverbs 18:12 (NIV)
We refer to a rash decision as one made without forethought or caution. I had nothing planned or thought out when I first walked into a church the first time. Just as well God did. My apparently 'rash' decision to seek something better in life turned out to be the best choice I'd ever made.
Nothing extraordinary happened during my first church service. Indeed, life became more difficult in some ways. Just walking into a large city church not knowing anyone and not understanding what the service meant almost sent me scurrying home early. Not that being at home improved my state of mind. As I persisted in going to church each week, I tried to share this new and interesting facet of my life with a very disinterested, almost hostile, husband. He'd had too many bad experiences with Christians as a teenager. Trying to talk with him proved to be yet another rash decision. Not well thought out at all.
I didn't become a Christian straight away. Only a year later, we moved to a small country town. Once the local grapevine got wind of the new teacher attending the Anglican church, a group of mums spoke to me at the school gate the following Monday.
"Oh, we're so pleased," one woman said. "We were praying for a Christian teacher."
Christian? Me? I looked around, wondering if they might have been addressing another person nearby. I had no idea what it meant to be a Christian for many years. Even when I believed I'd become a Christian, I still stumbled through some more bad decision making, with decidedly un-Christian choices. Praise the Lord for His mercy and forgiveness!
My early walk with God reflected that one-step-forward, three-steps-back kind of journey, but I have never regretted the 'rash' decision that led me to stepping into that big, scary church. I can also say for certain the decision to accept Jesus as my personal saviour was not a rash one, in any sense of the word.
