Why is it I feel so propelled at times to charge forward into yet another adventure without stopping to think or even God-forbid pray? What is that unseen propellant within me that lunges me to action without a plan? Who am I to think “I know better†than even God? Off I go without consulting the Master, others, or even my family. “I know what I’m doing†I think to myself …. It’s a wonder I haven’t broken my neck while tripping over my pride. But for the Grace of God, I would have long ago destroyed myself acting on immature impulses I thought were oh so important at the time.
A
action
Acute and absolute. Strong willed and presumptuous of heart, I act on these impulses with impunity. Never stopping to pray, think, plan or consult others … a quick sudden flush of energy fills my being as I strike out for the “promised landâ€. Certain of success, my hand finds the plow and off I go. Furrow after furrow, my plowshare digs deep, throwing that hard sod to the side with energetic ease. Focused and flush with zeal I am oblivious to my surroundings. Slowly, inevitably my plow shear dulls. Constant friction with that hard soil dulls the leading edge … requiring more effort to achieve previous results. I tire. I cannot finish my course. I am a flash in the pan. Failure.
S
Savior
Strong hands lift my form from the furrow I dug for myself. My face is soiled, my hands … bloodied, my soul is disfigured and undone.
Come, my child …. Rest. “Here, take my yoke and learn from Me for I am gentle and humble in heart. With me you will find rest for your soul, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (authors paraphrase) (taken from Matthew 11: 29,30)
H
Heaven
We can experience a little slice of heaven right here on earth should we accept the Masters yoke. By following His Word, by living His Word we find protection from those consequences of living out our rash behaviors and actions that inevitably end in disaster. We can be spared from much pain. It is His yoke upon us that keeps us on track, a track that leads not to disaster but to a contented life. By seeking counsel from Holy Spirit before we act on those rash impulses we can find God’s Will for our unique lives. His burden truly is light.
For me, rash actions flow from a lack of trust. We fail to trust Father and His perfect plan and perfect timetable for our lives. Rashly we strike out, rashly we respond, rashly we think we know better. Rashly we fail. Oh for the Grace of God, oh for the Love of God the Father, a Father who knows how to raise rash children.
