He paused at the front door, his words coldly calculated. “You don’t make me happy. I don’t want to be here. I’m leaving.”
With those words her life changed immediately. She watched from the window as he threw his things into the truck and sped down the driveway.
She remained at the window, as outside the winter winds brought the storm clouds. They rolled in like the smoke from a rampant fire. They were dark and ominous, ushering in a foreboding atmosphere which attempted to pull her into the darkness of despair.
She had no idea how long she stood there, simply staring out of the window. Tears refused to come as knife-edged hurt battled with the sweet softness of release.
For so long she had struggled and failed to meet his expectations. Holding her breath and walking on eggshells had become a way of life to her. Each day she waited to see if this time the threat to leave would actually be realized. As she stood motionless at the window, her innermost being seemed to physically relax and allowed her to let the mask fall, taking with it all that had held her in bondage.
Large lacy snowflakes began to fall and quickly obscured the dark ugliness of winter. The image took her by surprise as it took hold of her senses. She watched the dreary being transformed into breath-taking. The full realization that she was now alone did not scare her; indeed she felt an overwhelming sense of peace. She sensed God speaking to her through the beauty that was becoming more and more pronounced outside her window.
She turned and made her way to the den. Building a fire only took a little time, and then she wrapped her grandmother’s quilt around her and settled in the rocking chair with her worn King James Bible. She turned to her favorite passage, Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
Wrapped in the reminder of her grandmother’s love she read the passage several times and was reminded of an even greater love. Gentle tears began to flow as she bowed her head and prayed, “Thank you Father for the gentle comfort of your spirit. Thank you for Your love. I am never alone, for I am forever cushioned by Your Holy presence. No matter what may come, as long as I rest in Your care, I am always home.”
