From behind the curtain I peered out into the dark. The pounding continued but was less rapid as if it were pleading for the door to open. Then I heard a cry, Laura, Laura, it’s me Laura, it’s me. I ran down the stairs, I don’t know how I avoided running into something or knocking something over. I hadn’t turned on the lights. As I think back, it was as if the room opened up and provided me clear and safe passage, as God had done when he parted the Red Sea.
I swung opened the door and flew into the arms of my Beloved. We held one another for what seemed an eternity. Touching the sides of his face with my hands, I raised myself on my toes kissed his forehead and led him to his favorite chair near the window.
Everett liked looking out the window towards the mountains. The view during the day, blocked by nothing but nature gave him a sense of oneness with it. He once said the view at night, the darkness and sometimes the stars that peeked through, gave him a sense of endlessness. The light from the moon appeared to encircle his face. He looked more beautiful than ever. His eye’s had that twinkle in them that I loved so much, although tonight there was also something different about them but I couldn’t understand the what, that was different at the time. It would be hours later that this truth would be revealed.
I noticed a single tear running down the side of Everett's face. He attempted to discreetly wipe the tear away, but I had already seen it. It was clear he did not wish to share this emotion at this time and I honored his desire for privacy. I wondered instead about his unexpected visit. He had always called before visiting, until tonight.
Sitting close to Everett, starring into darkness with him, I said, "Dear heart," as I often call him, " tell me what’s going on, I sense something is terribly wrong." Everett responded, "I don’t know, one minute I was at home and the next minute I was here. I don’t even remember driving here." Hours past while we talked and made agreements and promises to one another. We fell asleep holding one another.
Everett awakened with a smile that assured me of his unconditional love for me. As I looked into his eye’s I recalled the day that he told me, "Laura this is it, the real thing, never forget this love." My reminisce was interrupted by a gentle hug. Wrapped in his arms, Everett kissed my forehead and said he would see me later but was going home for now. And so he did, seven hours and twenty-four minutes later, Everett went home to be with God.
