Topic: INDEFATIGABLE (02/11/16)
There she was, at it again….so early in the morning…good grief…this girl never stops! Oh, to have that energy and passion for something, anything!

At 39 Susan had decided to go back to college to finish her degree. With two years of college, she worked in the local school system as a teacher’s aide, but began to realize that she should finish her degree. She could do basically the same thing and benefit more financially. So…she was in her last semester and was glad to be almost through.

This younger girl that stood in front of the library always appeared to have a cause. She could be seen all around campus handing out flyers and wearing a smile. But it was more than the smile, it was her countenance too. You could tell she had real joy and contentment as she breezed through campus.

Susan decided to go to class and wait for it to start rather than stop at the library to do research first, as planned. She was settling in and began to take out her book when Miss happy girl bounces in….grrr….so much for a little alone time. Then, to Susan’s surprise, the young lady sat down quietly and began to read. There was only 20 minutes till class, but enough time to sit and observe how peaceful the girl seemed to be. Finally, Susan was the one to break the silence. She asked her what all her causes were. The girl looked at her with the most penetrating and amazing eyes she ever remembered seeing. They were crystal blue. And they spoke volumes before she ever opened her mouth. She introduced herself as Joy. How appropriate, Susan thought. Joy then told her she volunteered at her church on the outreach team and their project for the year was an event to benefit human trafficking victims. Susan was amused to say the least. Who knew this girl who was so cheery was working for her church. Susan’s only experience with church was to the contrary. The last time she went everything seemed doom and gloom. Curiosity got the best of her so she inquired further. She had heard about human trafficking of course since it was on the news more and more. But somehow when Joy talked about it, it came alive, as a cause worthy of support, prevention and rescue.

In the following weeks Susan kept her eye on Joy. Everywhere she turned she seemed to run into her. Even outside of campus. She saw her while shopping and even in the dentist’s office just the other day. And since they had one class together, she always saw her then.

Finally, she asked her one day why she had such tenacity and passion. Joy told her the story of how she had a friend from high school a few years ago who was beautiful and talented but got mixed up with the wrong crowd. While out partying, she was abducted and sold into human trafficking. The end of the story was not a happy one for her friend. It was too late. However, this experience brought Joy to her knees. She cried out to God and He began to lead her, first to her church and then to college to obtain a degree in social work. Besides being on the outreach team, she also taught a middle school girl’s class at her church. She was determined to make a difference and with God’s help, she had vowed to do just that!

Susan just sat there with tears rolling down her face. All this time working in the school system she had felt it was just a way to make a living. Now she began to see it as much more. Joy saw her tears and asked if she could pray with her. As Joy prayed for Susan, Susan asked the Lord to come into her heart. When she opened her eyes, she knew now what the driving force was behind Joy. Her love for God and people came from knowing Him and that is what gave her the stamina to endure, even when things seemed insurmountable.

In the days ahead, Susan looked at her job and life so differently. Her eyes were open to the possibilities that lay before her to impact others, starting with her own family. Just this morning, her husband commented to her that he had never seen her so indefatigable before. She couldn’t wait to explain it to him…

I truly enjoyed this story. This is a small thing, but I can't picture a husband telling his wife she's indefatigable. It just is not an everyday word, I think.

This is a good testimony. People tend to watch one's actions rather than listen to mere words. As the saying goes,"Actions speak louder than words."

I loved your story. There was a freshenss to it that caught me up in Joy's passion.
I know with only 750 words we can only skim the surface of a story- but it had depth. I hope you are relentless in your practice of writing.
