“Look!” “I found one!” Josie pointed toward the tiny hint of green that defied the icy rule of winter. She was right. There it was. The first crocus of the season, the hope of things to come. We laughed and danced around the site. A new rite of spring had just been born in our household.

She searched the rest of the flower bed where we had buried more of these little treasures last November. Soon she found another, and then another. “How do they know when it’s time to grow?” she asked.

How do they know? “They just wait until God says it’s time for them to grow and then they do.”

She looked at the tiny green leaf, then at her now a bit too snug snow suit. “Is that how I grow too?”

“Pretty much. But God has made you a pretty little girl that’s really special to Him and me too, though” She grinned and posed like a model she had seen on TV. I could see the next thought forming even before she asked.

“Is God telling my brother to grow too?”, she asked as she glanced at my expanding waist line.

“Yes, He is.”

“Oh.”, she said as she took off running in search of more defiant crocus, the great mystery of new life firmly fixed in her head.

God says “Grow.” and it is spring.
