The song goes on to say what the hills are alive with—the sound of music. Music is the biggest joy of my day. I wake up to my clock radio set to inspiring Christian music. In the car I listen to music. Sometimes when I walk, I put my headphones on and listen to upbeat praise music that keeps me moving and motivated. lf I go too long without music, it’s like a day without sunshine because music brightens my spirits.
Ms. Andrews sang about how her heart wanted to sing every song it heard and sing through the night. My son and I both love to sing, and when we’re together, one of us will say something, a phrase pops up that is in a song, and we’ll start singing the song. Put mountains and music together and you can’t help but praise the Lord. Music does that to you—lifts you up, encourages, and gives hope and strength to go on.
At another camp I go to every year, the lodge is on the waterfront of a bay. I’m not fond of being in water, but I love to sit and watch and listen to the sounds of water. On my morning prayer walks there, I put my headphones on and listen to soft instrumental praise music and I feel like I’m in the middle of a music video of nature, watching the tide roll in, the heron standing tall on the rocks, the birds sitting on the posts of the pier, and the flight of ducks taking off and landing on the water. I took some gorgeous sunset pictures there and at home which have so many different colors in them, and are so vibrant. I watch the sun set and have to marvel at how God created all these beautiful aspects of nature for His pleasure and our enjoyment.
Whenever I can, I like to walk in the woods if possible. When I’m at camp, I walk as often as I can. In the morning, it’s a prayer walk to the waterfalls where I sit down and meditate before continuing my prayer walk. In the afternoon, I walk in the woods looking for shade and refreshing breezes, and enjoy sitting on a bench or a log for a while, watching the animals dart back and forth and listening to the birds sing. In the evening, I walk again to relax and wind down from a full day of activities, and remember that my life is in His hands and He will continue to care for me as He does the birds.
In the Fall my son and I like to go for a long walk in the woods, listening to the crunch of leaves under our feet, feeling the crisp air, admiring the beauty of the colors on the leaves still on some of the trees, and watching the squirrels scurrying around stockpiling nuts for the Winter. Even now looking out my window at a mountain behind my house, I am reminded of the Scripture verse, “I lift up my eyes toward the mountains—from where will my help come?” (Psalm 121:1, ISV). The trees now look like stick figures, bare of the beauty they showed just weeks ago, but they stand there straight and tall like a tower, reminding me that even when the beauty of Summer and Fall are gone, God is still there in the midst of trials and problems.
Wherever I am and whatever I’m doing, my heart is blessed with music and the things in nature and I sing once more.
