I reached for her-
she hugged me back-
but her frail body
and emotional response
reminded me of a life size,
worn out, well-handled
rag-doll.
I drew back-
wounded that her
empty, sunken eyes
did not light up
at my presence.
I could not feel her pain,
mine was too great.
She is dying,
There, I’ve said it.
She knows it,
I know it.
So where is the grand finale?
Where are the reconciliations,
professions of love,
explanations of the past,
and blessings for the future?
I am angry with this
ugliness;
this disease that
is robbing me of the chance
to rewrite our
relationship
into the loveliness
of make believe.
I become ice,
Frigid and unyielding.
I watch without helping-
as she walks away-
her hesitant steps
like a child learning to walk.
And I am humbled to see
my mother
has a beauty that
defies chamber pots
and loss of hair.
