Rachel valued her grandmother’s knowledge, her deep beliefs, but they were not hers. Grandma Kate had her best interest at heart, even then, but Rachel still didn’t think that teaching piano lessons was for her. Yes, she could play both by ear and now by reading the music, but teaching it was another dilemma.
She knew that she needed the money for her and her daughter Katy who was five, after losing her parents and husband within a year of each other; she hadn’t done anything with this gift as her grandmother called it. She had the beautiful baby grand piano that her grandmother had left her, her loving words on the card; use this for the glory of God, my dear, Love Grandma.
With money so tight, Rachel was forced to make the decision to start teaching children, or adults’ piano, she would see how many wanted to start lessons. The ad she placed a few days ago had good results, she now had five children, and three adults interested in learning.
To Rachel’s amazement, she really did have the knack and the patience to teach. The children caught on extremely well, as did one adult in particular, Marge Steiner. Marge was over sixty, and she had known her grandmother very well.
While teaching Marge, Rachel got to know more about her grandmother as a young girl. The places she liked to go. Marge also told her about her school and what Kate liked to do.
Rachel never knew that Grandma Kate wanted to sing. Rachel knew she had a good singing voice, for she remembered her singing in church. The desire went deep, Grandma Kate longed to be a great singer, but she never had the talent to pursue it. Instead she taught voice lessons, and a few piano lessons, hence the piano she had in her home.
Over the years many of her voice students called or came to thank her for her love for teaching. One girl, Ida Duff made several albums. She had many students ranging in the hundreds over the years. Kate McGregor was well-known in town. Giving these lessons paid for many things for her family over the period of years.
Marge told her that many were blessed by what Grandma Kate did, she also helped with the plays, concerts, costume designs you name it she did it.
Rachel added a few more students to her list, and slowly she had been able to save a great deal of money over and above her daytime job as bank teller. As the weeks flew by it was time for a recital of her talented students, and Marge was the best, Rachel wondered if she had already had lessons. Maybe from Grandma Kate?
She asked Marge if she had picked from the three choices that Rachel had given to each one.
“I want to do the one that your grandmother wrote, would that be ok dear?” the looked in those eyes melted Rachel’s reply.
“I haven’t heard this have I Marge? Maybe I should.” Rachel said.
“Dear, I want this to be a surprise!” Marge pretended to adjust her glasses. “I promise it will be well worth the wait.”
The day of the recital was here. Katy was sitting with her aunt, they were so excited for Rachel, they were not sure if Rachel would ever have the nerve to try anything in her grief.
As each student started their piece for the recital, Rachel felt the love and pride she had for each one, there was a few mistakes, but overall, they all did a great job, finally it was Marge’s turn, Marge came up to her and asked if she would play this piece, as Marge wanted to sing it, caught by surprise Rachel said yes, the piece was called “Wondrous Love”.
Marge has an exceptional voice, as the two started out, the piece that Marge sang was about Kate’s family, and it was the most beautiful piece that she had ever heard. Grandma Kate did indeed have a special gift; her love of the Lord was evident in her song, something Rachel needed, and wanted to pursue.
Grandma Kate had the right idea and Kate wanted this in her and her daughter’s life as well. She couldn’t wait.
