As I looked out my kitchen window mid summer, I noticed the clouds that were forming were shades of light green. On the Nebraska plains, this color scheme represents bad thunderstorms. With a dutiful eye on the ever forming clouds, I went back to my housework, preparing for supper, while my 7 month old baby girl was sleeping in her crib. Somewhere in time, I had forgotten about those greenish ominous storm clouds. As I checked the skies from our double-wide trailer house, I saw a small twister brewing not far from us. All of a sudden, the wind came up suddenly and I heard a loud scratching noise as if someone was peeling back and ripping tin off a building.

The wind became more intense and as I looked out the windows all I saw was the swirling of dust so extreme that I could not see across the road to the fields that we farmed. The mobile home shook with force. Then I heard it again, this shrieking of tin like chalk to a chalkboard.

I ran back to the bedroom where our baby girl was sleeping and to my dismay there was no roof on our bedroom. I could see blue sky churning. Though the wind had quieted, the rain clouds now started to form. They look deep blue and black, lightening and thunder displayed God’s majesty. As I looked up where blue skies now filled my sight, I felt the little drops of rain on my forehead. The rain drops marched in unison as the band began to play harder and harder. The rain’s intensity grew to meet the Master conductor’s wishes. The drops started softly and then began to move with passion as it came down.

There was nothing to do but grab my baby, diaper bag, blankets, clothes and start running down the road about a quarter of a mile away to my in-laws. I was shook to the bone and all I wanted was safety for us. Halfway there, my father-in-law met me in his car and took us to safety.

We called the insurance company, and they told us they would be out to secure the roof so that we could save our home. But before they could ever get to our home, the rains grew terrible and it rained for two days without stopping. We did all we could to save our belongings, but it was to no avail. We moved furniture to the other end of the mobile home, we took our cherished belongings, and we watched as Mother Nature’s fury destroyed our home.

At the end of the day, we counted our many blessings and although we had lost much that day in earthly possessions, we still had our little family and remarked just how blest we were.

When it was all said and done, we had enough money to build our home on the site where the little twister had done so much damage. We know, in part, what hurricane victims feel as they see the devastation that is incurred when storms and hurricanes come, and we
know that the living God has made the heavens, the earth, the sea and everything in them. We know He sends the rains to water the crops and He provides for us the food that we
need, and He fills our hearts with joy, if we let Him. Philippians 4:11-13 tells us that we are to be content in whatever befalls us in our circumstances. We know what it is to be in need and we know what it is like to have plenty. Paul says, “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in
plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” Thank you, Father, for those precious verses to give us hope.
